It's not uncommon for friction to arise on the set of a film or TV show. Sometimes, clashes between stars and crew members lead to actors being replaced.

The writer-producer that Gates McFadden is talking about was Maurice Hurley. I've always very much preferred Beverly Crusher over Katherine Pulaski (I really hate Katherine Pulaski!). And while I was very glad they brought the character of Dr. Crusher back to The Next Generation, it was still disappointing. She almost never got any main story lines, and when she did they weren't very interesting. The writers/producers never did much of anything at all with Dr. Beverly Crusher unfortunately.
