It is indisputable that the best musical episode of all time is Buffy the vampire slayer's 'Once more with feeling'. Joss Whedon effortlessly translated the Buffyverse to a musical context, found an excellent balance between song and dialogue and even managed to convey a heartfelt message amidst all the humour. In this analysis I discuss how Whedon's prior love for the musical theatre repertoire influenced this script, in particular how he took inspiration from Sondheim's body of work, and how it ultimately is the main reason for its enormous success.
