In this video, I take a look at the history of 51 Minds Entertainment (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/51_Minds_Entertainment) and their partnership with VH1 (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=485534). In the early 2000s, reality shows such as Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, I Love Money, and more dominated TV until one day, it seemed as they as they all disappeared. Many people know about the franchise, but don't know the story.

VH1 (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/VH1) released a host of popular "celebreality" (https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/the-rise-and-fall-of-vh1s-celebreality-how-megan-wants-a-millionaire-changed-reality-tv-forever/ar-AA1vGQpg?ocid=BingNewsVerp) dating shows (https://www.reddit.com/r/popculturechat/comments/14egtbr/if_celebrity_dating_shows_were_to_make_a_comeback/) in the mid- to late 2000s (https://www.reddit.com/r/redscarepod/comments/qz1f1g/vh1s_2000s_celebreality_shows_are_a_rainbow/), starting with Flavor of Love (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/FlavorOfLove) (itself a spin-off of a spin-off), which ran for several seasons, and the next most popular series, Rock of Love (https://www.reddit.com/r/RockOfLove/comments/1escuny/wow_its_been_15_years/), where contestants would compete to date celebrities Flavor Flav and Bret Michaels (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Music/Poison), respectively. Popular losing bachelorettes from those shows ended up getting their own dating shows (https://fanfare.pub/all-vh1-celebrity-dating-reality-shows-ranked-from-worst-to-not-worst-a846235803f9) such as I Love New York, (https://www.primetimer.com/quickhits/as-i-love-new-york-reunites-celebreality-resurfaces) Daisy of Love, and Megan Wants a Millionaire, and losers from those shows even got their own spinoffs (Real Chance of Love). Popular contestants from Flavor of Love (https://www.reddit.com/r/RockOfLove/comments/jdc085/i_worked_as_a_story_producer_for_the_of_love/) and eventually Rock of Love would end up on Charm School (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/CharmSchool), while all contestants were eligible to compete for money on I Love Money (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/ILoveMoney). Though spin-offs kept multiplying (https://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/2021/07/surreal-life-vh1-spin-offs/), the genre (http://www.neontommy.com/news/2010/10/what-happened-vh1-s-reality.html) itself was already suffering — not only were ratings (https://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/31/business/media/31cable.html) dipping lower as viewers started losing interest in Z-listers whose only claim to fame was being in a genre (https://www.reddit.com/r/cordcutters/comments/13m898y/comment/jkurpkd/) perceived as (https://www.reddit.com/r/popculturechat/comments/14lgyly/the_golden_age_of_mtvs_and_vh1_guilty_pleasure/) seedy and trashy (https://www.reddit.com/r/Xennials/comments/1b0nnv3/does_anybody_else_miss_the_trashy_vh1_shows_from/), but many felt the channel (https://www.u2interference.com/threads/the-decline-of-vh1-the-story-of-three-eras.183517/) was oversaturated (https://screenrant.com/best-vh1-celebreality-00s-shows-ranked-imdb/) with spin-offs, as well as the fact that the scripted nature of the apparent "reality" series (http://dr.jeebus.sydlexia.com/vh1.htm), though always apparent, was getting more and more obvious. The death blow to the "celebreality" (https://officialfan.proboards.com/thread/65346/new-vh1-celebreality-shows?page=1) genre came at the close of the decade with a contestant named Ryan Jenkins (https://www.reddit.com/r/RockOfLove/comments/1j3s4vy/do_you_think_the_ryan_jenkins_scandal_changed_vh1/), who was a competitor in Megan Wants a Millionaire and won the third season of I Love Money. Jenkins' wife Jasmine was found dead (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Jasmine_Fiore) and Jenkins immediately became the prime suspect in her death; he committed suicide while attempting to flee. VH1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_VH1) quickly pulled the plug on the remaining episodes of Megan and cancelled I Love Money without showing Jenkins's winning season, broadcasting only the already-filmed fourth season after a year. All future celebreality projects were shelved, including the third season of New York and future seasons of Flavor slated for the following year. The passing of time and the shock of the violent incident chilled most interest in the genre (https://ew.com/tv/2020/01/30/ryan-jenkins-jasmine-fiore-megan-wants-a-millionaire/?srsltid=AfmBOorvN40qcfe2pn-T47YJmlErQryHm6Lrwd6PWnswNxhLknPeO9Eg), and VH1 (https://www.u2interference.com/threads/whats-happened-to-vh1.115709/) has toned down reality programming in general to this day, with most of the celebreality (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5kslweJY4A) contestants, the majority of whom failed to achieve fame outside of VH1 (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/VH1), fading into obscurity.
