View Full Version : The Saddest GG Episode...

Which episode do you think was the saddest? All of the episodes has moments of humor, but there were some that were really sad.

I'll hold off on telling mine (unless someone says it).

Who wants to be first??

Okay, I'll go first ;)

I think it goes without saying that the final episode was very sad for obvious reasons, but I was very moved at the episode where Phil died. I didn't care for the episode in general but I thought the end, when Sophia broke down, was very dramatic and yep, I shed a tear or two. Her acting was superb, simply because she could play this hard hearted and sometimes mean old lady yet she showed a much softer and thoughful side which was pretty amazing.

I also found Home Again Rose quite sad aswell, especially when the girls were told that Rose had to have major heart surgery. Their reaction was so real that it actually shocked me because I wasn't expecting it...I've never had a sitcom/TV show do that to me before so it was quite an odd feeling. One minute we're crying with the laughter, the next we're being gripped by a terrific storyline. Only The Golden Girls can do that!

That's me done babbling, what about you?

Some of the saddest ones: Rose's blind sister, Sophia's friend wants to swallow a bottle of "Enditol" (end it all) and Dorothy's brother Phil dying. The final ep was sort of sad, too. I'll go with the Phil one.

Actually it was her sister that needed the transplant.

Phil's death was sad, but the episode that I always watch extra close is when Big Daddy died. Blanche missed out on seeing him one last time and to actually attend the funeral. Everytime I see it I realized once again how good an actress Rue is.

callmetootie
10-24-2002, 11:51 AM
Rue always gave the best dramatic performance when she needed to. Betty was excellent at being funny, but she overreacted about everything when she had to be dramatic, and you could tell that it was Betty and not Rose.

The final episode, no question.

But also, there's the episode where the girls are babysitting Emily, a child they think has been abandoned. At the end of the episode, Blanche calls her daughter Janet, who's obviously being very cold to her. That moment always hits me.

And as previous posters mentioned, there's the episode where Phil dies and Sophia breaks down. It's always horrible when a mother loses her child.

there are two episodes that make me sad every time. But they both also make me laugh til i die:lol:

The Final Episode- For obvious reasons, i just can't get over that it's the last time the 4 girls are together.

Big Daddy Dies- Oh how could the writers kill off Big Daddy. This episode was SOOO funny though. The best part was when sophia had just spent all her money on that plate, and blanche walks in and smashes the plate:lol:

5) When Phil Dies
6) When Sophia has a heart attack

After seeing this thread, I re-watched the final episode, and yeah, that has to be the saddest episode.

But, here goes:
The episode where Phil dies
The episode where Big Daddy dies
The one with baby Emily

And pretty much all the ones you all already listed, LOL. I need to work on remembering the episode titles better... lol

Yep, those are the ones I think are the saddest. The first time I saw the final episode, yes tears were there. LOL, I couldn't help myself.

The episode where Big Daddy dies is sad but as Jayman said, it shows how great of an actor Rue is. When she goes to his grave and is talking to him and tells Dorothy that she's no one's little girl anymore and also at the kitchen table where she kind of breaks down asking, "Why? Why didn't I go when he called?" Those two parts get me every time.

I think everyone has covered all of the really sad moments of the Golden Girls. Definitely the series finale, when Dorothy is saying goodbye to the Girls... that's absolutely heartbreaking!!!

Also, when Rose is addicted to painkillers and the girls have to stay up and help her.

Hi Michael  (I got your PM, will mail you soon, been a bit busy past few days.)

I also thought this episode was quite touching. At first I thought they were going to handle the storyline all wrong, especially when, after staying up all night with Rose, they assumed she was cured of her addiction. Because my better half runs an addictions Rehabilitation Clinic, I understand how difficult it is to get over substance dependancy and was glad that they didn't just sort out the problem in one night - that would have been really unrealistic and perhaps wishful thinking.

I have a tie.

The episode where they have the winning lottery ticket and they end up at the shelter...whew, tears everytime.

And of course the final episode. Especially the part when they wait for Dorothy to come through one more time, geez waterworks no matter how many times I have seen it.

How could I have forgotten to include the homeless shelter episode? Near the end, when the Girls are searching for the winning lottery ticket and they play "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?"... truly touching. And when they finally find the ticket, they give it to the priest working at the shelter! :)

There are so many:

I don't necesarily think the one where Sophia's friend is going to kill herself is necessarily sad...But it's VERY touching. The writers were geniuses.

The one where Phil died was sad to me.... Seeing a mother lose her child can almost be too much.

No one mentioned this one, but I thought it was sad. The one where Sophia's Friend from the beach pier has Alzheimer's disease, and has to be sent away.

Hazel_H
11-02-2002, 09:09 PM
I can't remember the name of the episode (maybe "Old Friends"), but the one where Sophia's friend has Alzheimers-- they sit out on the boardwalk most of the time in that one. I found it very sad.

Goldenboi

Let's see:

1. The last episode. The last 10 minutes of that episode always makes me bawl.

2. Phil's death. Once again, I don't feel really bad until the end, when Sophia finally comes to terms with it. Estelle showed more emotion than she'd ever done (which was character appropriate). Makes me lose it every time.

3. Big Daddy's death. The things they could have done with the character! And I wonder what happened to his widow, it would have been interesting to see her make an appearence in the episode.

I think these are the sad ones

Not Another Monday: Sophias friend wants to kill herself.

Ebbtides Revenge: Sophias son dies and it's not untill the end when she crys that I start to cry.

And the one where Blanche dreams her husband is alive and she finally got to hug him. I thought that was kind of sad.

There's only two episodes that I find sad:
-The Final episode: I think all the women gave great performances at the very end.
(there aren't many tv shows that have great endings, but Golden Girls did)
-The episode where Phil dies: The actress Estelle and her character Sophia was great in this episode. I felt Sophia's pain. I don't know what it's like loosing a child, but I know what it's like loosing someone that you love dearly.

I think there were several sad episodes, I can't name all of them. The saddest one, I think is the last one. I remember where Rue said on TV Tales TGG that they were all very sad. That there wasn't a tear not being shed in the house. It made me very sad but it makes me feel touched that they all cared about one another. I loved it.;) Because it was so very touching. Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia were all hugging each other very tightly and crying. It is so touching if you look at it that way.

I thought of another one, but this episode has alot of humor, but it's
also very touching and a bit sad,
it's the one where Dorothy has Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome, but Sophia thought
Dorothy might die. Once again, the
actress Estelle Getty and her character
was absolutely wonderful, especially towards the end of Part 1 of that episode.

I find these episodes to be the most touching and saddest episodes of the Golden Girls:

1. when Blanche's Grandson comes for a visit with a bad attitude due to his unhappy situation at home. He plans to runaway, until
Dorothy talks him out of it. He wants to stay with the Girls, but has to go back to his unhappy parents,

2. When Sophia's Friend Martha wants to kill herself with pills to ease the pain of being alone and sick. As Sophia tells her" Remember better, Remember Life." That line touched me the most.

3. When Sophia meets her Friend Alvin on the Boadwalk. As they get to know each other it turns out that he is suffering form Alzihemiers . Watching Dorothy tell Sophia was the hardest part of that episode.

4. The Death of Big Daddy and Blanche's reaction to it. Blanche is caught up in some ball until her sister Virginia calls and tells her
he died. Her first reaction is denial until she remembers what her father said about Ketchup on Lima Beans and Breaks up.

5. The Death of Phil and the Bitter struggle Sophia and Phil's wife Angela. I nearly cried after watching Sophia finally accept she loved Phil even though he was a cross dresser. Her love transcended his behavior.

6.Sophia's Friend when the Center is shipped to Sunny Pastures, one of the worst nursing homes in the city. As it runs out Blanche using money from her boob account pay for a better nursing home. Yet, the epsiode leaves on a somber note in that alot of elderly people find themselves inadequate nursing homes

I also thought that the episode where George "supposably" comes back, and when you find out in the end that its all a dream, was kind of sad.

Some episodes I found sad were:

Yes, the Big Daddy episode- The part that got me was when Blanche was at the graveyard saying goodbye one last time and it ended by her saying "I'm nobody's little girl anymore."

The Final Episode when Dorothy leaves for the last time

The Alzheimer's episode with Sophia and teh Old Man

The conclusion of "Sophia's Wedding"- it was heartbreaking to see that beautiful pizza stand burned down and along with that, Sophia's new marriage

The episode where Rose gets a Heart attack.

I don't know if I've posted here before or not, and I'm too lazy to look. The saddest ones for me were these:

1. The one where Dorothy has the Lottery ticket that wins $10,000 and they visit a homeless shelter. This one's depressing too.

2. The last two episodes of the show.

Even though it was a little far fetched, I thought the episode where George, Blanche's husband, comes back to her in her dream was pretty emotional. And in the end, she finnaly got to hug him one last time. :(

I didn't read all the posts so not sure if this is covered, but the episode where Blanche's husband George comes back from the dead and Sonny Bono and Lyle Wagner are after Dorothy, the episode itself is silly, but the end is so sad when she wakes up once again and realises it was all a dream and it is like she has lost him all over again.

iloveTV

I didn't read all the posts either but here's my two cents: I think the series finale was the saddest. I cry every time I watch it especially the end when Dorothy says that they are all her sisters and she loves them and then she keeps coming in and they keep looking for her. But after a couple times she doesn't come back and you see the girls hugging eachother and really crying. You can tell they are really crying not acting. I'm getting sad thinking about it.

In the final scene during the final episode, the 4 actresses were crying for real, they didn't even have to worry about acting. It was a very sad week leading up to that, at least, that's what Rue said in an interview.

Here are the quotes that are very touching at the end........

DOROTHY: Well....

BLANCHE: Well....

ROSE: Yeah....

SOPHIA: I guess this is it.

DOROTHY: Right....listen....

BLANCHE: Dorothy, you don't have to say anything.

ROSE: Yeah. I mean, what can you say about 7 years of fights...laughter....late night talks......cheesecake?

DOROTHY: Yes..well....I just want you to know that....that it's been an emotional experience I'll always keep very close to my heart....(starts to cry)...and that these are memories that I'll wrap myself in when the world gets cold...and I forget that there are people that are warm and loving.....

BLANCHE: We love you too.

DOROTHY: I'll miss you. Your friendship was something I never expected at this stage of my life and I couldn't have asked for a nicer surprise.

BLANCHE: That's how we feel too.

DOROTHY: I have to get going.

ROSE: Dorothy? Is this goodbye?

DOROTHY: I love you.....always.

This isn't the last time they are all together. Bea Arthur guest-starred on a 2 part episode of The Golden Palace. In this episode she thought that Sophia was being worked too hard at the hotel/motel and was determined to bring her back home with her.

I wasn't in love with the spin-off. It had little to do with Bea's absence and more to do with the addition of the other characters who to me I didn't really care about and who were very generic and predictable. But this episode where Bea guest-stars ranks as one of my favorites. She was only on for like 1 minute and she made me roar with her line to Chuey, who was hitting on her, "Walk away now and no one gets hurt." Chuey then said, "Oh, you must be Dorothy."

I think this episode was funnier than some of the regular Golden Girls episodes.

The saddest episode, one that actually brought me to tears at the end, was the one where Sophia befriends an elderly black man on the boardwalk who is suffering from Alzheimers disease. His name was Alvin. The final scene, where Sophia and Dorothy sit on the boardwalk where Sophia and Alvin used to sit and the music was a very emotional moment. Definitely one of the best episodes of the series.

the one where Dorothy takes Sophia back to New York to help her with her memory lapses and Sophia's trying to find a carving that her late husband made for her - she thought she was losing her mind when it wasn't in the kitchen pantry where she believed it was, but it turned out to be in her old bedroom - one of the most touching episodes of the series

I found it very touching when Dorothy had the gambling addiction and convinces Rose to write her a check. Rose is so nice about it that Dorothy breaks down and tells her that she was going to gamble with the money and Rose just says that she knows, but hoped Dorothy would come to her senses. The episode as a whole isn't that SAD per se, but I think I teared up a little in that moment.

I actually have 3 favorite saddest times. The saddest. When Phil died and Sophia finally broke down to Phils wife. That split second. Second, I dont remember the episode but Sophia was friends which this old black gentleman and I remember them sitting at a bench and he doesnt remember. The saddest for me personally was when Dorothy had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Well, of course the finale was the saddest.

I really think that "Break-In" is one of the saddest for me, because it hits so close to home. I can easily relate to Rose's fear. Just knowing that some stranger(s) have been in your home, whether you were home at the time or not, is truly terrifying.

"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" is a real tear jerker. It was so great to see the girls finally give the winning ticket to the shelter after all that they had seen. It really puts things into perspective.

All the other ones that were mentioned were also pretty sad.

My saddest episodes are: When Rose was in the hospital and she had to have a triple bypass, when Sophia chocked on something and rose was trying to bring her back and when she woke up she told the girls that she wanted to go to heaven to be with Sal her husband and the last one is when Blanche's father "Big Daddy" died. Everytime I see that I think of a close friend who passed away in 2003. I think of him alot in that episode.

For me, bar none, was when Dorothy left (final episode obviously). In particular when Dorothy leaves the house for the final time and the other "girls" continue to look around the living room entrances for her to return for the third time - then they realize that she really has left them.

I Love Carol Burnett!

My opinion where all the girls talk about past birthdays, Roses birthday was so sad. Where she baked her own birthday cake and talked to Charlie after he was dead. "I love you Charlie, I miss you." That was so sad

And like others have said where Big Daddy died.

After watching the final two episodes of the show several times over the past few days (I simply love DVRs!), I have to say it is one of the best final episodes of a sitcom in television history. Everything about the final episode is pitch perfect, and I love how all of the characters remain true to form until the very end. It was both touching and hilarious, which can often be a difficult task to accomplish in a situation comedy, but it was pulled off brilliantly due to wonderful writing and the incredible acting talents of the four stars. I've seen the final "Good-bye" scene so many times, yet it never fails to bring a tear to my eyes, as well as a good laugh, when Dorothy keeps returning to give the Girls final hugs. A class act, through and through!

I think the last episode is also very sad. During the Golden Palace, it was also sad when at the end of the episode where Dorothy realizes that the girls have moved on.

But the episode that stands out to me is the end of the episode where Phil dies. It is so sad when Sofia breaks down and starts crying because she admitted that even though she was ashamed of her son, she still loved him. That was one of the saddest moments in Golden Girls.

I think "Home Again, Rose" it had me in tears :crying:

I also think this one is sad, I don't remember the name, but it was when Sophia had a friend named "Alvin" from the boardwalk and at the end when he left, I felt it was really sad :(

There was a lot of sad episodes, but I have to say that "Not Another Monday" was the saddest I've seen. I sometimes feel like Martha and I don't want to end up alone either. I thought Sophia's lines in the scene when Martha was about to take the pills was pure writing genious. If that wasn't a big enough tear-jerker, the last scene with Sophia and the baby when Sophia picked little Frank up and told him life is full of twists and turns and he's just starting in life brought me to tears. Although I never like sad episodes, this one touched me a lot.

I changed my mind about "Old Friends", it's not as sad after you've watched it 2-3 times.

Right now I think "Not Another Monday" is the saddest episode in the series. No matter how many times I watch it, it is always SO sad!

I also think the Very last episode is sad too.

The episode in the 2nd season when Blanche gets really attached to a baby the girls are looking after.

After the baby is collected by her dad, Blanche calls up Janet her daughter, just to say hello and arrange a meeting. It's obvious at first that Janet doesn't want to know. And you can see it's breaking Blanches heart.

Gets me every single time, lump in the throat, blurred TV screen, the whole works.

I was watching that episode with a friend once, and I was ashamed because guys aren't supposed to cry at something like The Golden Girls, but when I looked over he had tears in his eyes too.

It was wonderful acting.
