Tahj Mowry says he was never confused about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen playing the same character on Full House thanks to his experiences with his own twin sisters, Tia and Tamera Mowry.
The actor and singer joined Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber on the most recent episode of their How Rude, Tanneritos! podcast to chat about his recurring role on the beloved sitcom. Tahj made his Full House debut as Michelle Tanner’s best friend Teddy in 1991, when he was just 5 years old.
“Was it confusing at your age to see the Olsen twins switching off the role of Michelle? Was that easy to understand, or were you kind of thrown by it?” Barber asked.
Then, as now, child labor laws limited the number of hours young actors could work on set, so the Olsen twins shared the role of the youngest Tanner sister throughout all of Full House’s eight-season run on ABC. But while Tahj may not have understood the reasons behind it, he did not recall ever being confused by the situation.
“Obviously, my sisters are twins, so in that aspect, I was like, ‘Oh, okay. Yeah. That makes sense. There's two of them. They split the work,’ ” he said. “I understood that. I was never like, ‘Huh?’ ”
Tahj’s older sisters, Tia and Tamera, began working as child actors around the same time he did in the early ’90s, and went on to star in their own sitcom, Sister, Sister, in which they played twin sisters rather than sharing a single role.
Tahj admitted that he’s never been asked about what it was like performing opposite two different actors in the same role at such a young age.
“I wish I could go back into my thinking the first time I saw that happen,” the 38-year-old said. “I wonder exactly what I was thinking. But, yeah, I think having twin sisters at home kind of like — I don't know. It made it make more sense to me, maybe.”
Tahj added that working with both Olsen sisters made his experience on Full House more fun.
“When you're watching the show, Teddy has one scene partner: Michelle,” he explained. “But in real life, I got to have two scene partners, and they were, you know, they're two different people, so we had different relationships.”
Tahj appeared as Teddy in 14 episodes during Full House’s final four seasons. He went on to appear in several episodes of Sister, Sister, and starred in his own sitcom, Smart Guy, which aired for three seasons on The WB from 1997 to 1999. He also voiced the role of Wade Load in the Disney Channel animated series Kim Possible.
As an adult, he starred in Freeform’s Baby Daddy from 2012 to 2017, and in Disney+’s The Muppets Mayhem in 2023.
