No foul play is suspected, which would lead you to believe this was carbon monoxide poisoning, or similar.
Certainly one of the greatest actors in the history of the movies.

Dude111 02-27-2025, 06:40 PM Very sad..........
stevea 02-27-2025, 06:46 PM RIP for both. Such a sad story.
Dude111 02-27-2025, 06:56 PM I hope Foul play wasnt involved :(
Bonniegirl 02-27-2025, 09:17 PM Really strange and very sad !:( I wonder what happened?
Dude111 02-28-2025, 01:06 AM Its very sad :(
Babalu 02-28-2025, 07:18 AM Now the police are saying that the circumstances are such that they have to perform autopsies and toxicology tests in order to determine what happened. The gas company tested the lines and said there was no gas leak. Hackman and his wife were found in different rooms and seemed to have both fallen where they were found. No one had seen them for two weeks. Along with one dead dog, there were two healthy dogs found. Definitely a mystery.
Dude111 02-28-2025, 11:31 AM I wonder if someone did this to them??
I dont think the shot would have killed thier dog!!
This is very sad....... I think someone poisioned them! (And somehow got the dog too)
Foggy 02-28-2025, 02:20 PM Deputies found the 95-year-old actor and Arakawa deceased on Wednesday (Feb 26 2025) around 1:45 p.m., according to a statement Thursday from the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office. The office says it does not suspect foul play, however, an exact cause of death has not been determined. In a search warrant released Thursday, police described Hackman and 64 year old Arakawa's deaths as "suspicious."

After Sante Fe County Sheriff's deputies found the couple and their dog dead at their New Mexico home on Wednesday, authorities are still investigating the cause, which at this point is still considered "suspicious." Details continue to emerge, including a search warrant affidavit report that Arakawa's body was found partially mummified and that multiple dogs were found alive, with more to follow in the coming weeks.
More information about the timeline of their deaths is also coming to light. "Just based on their body and other evidence on the body, it appears several days and possibly even up to a couple weeks" had passed since their deaths, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza told the "Today" show Friday, acknowledging the "challenge" of crafting a timeline as Hackman and Arakawa were "private individuals and a private family." I heard an interview today on NY radio where a lawyer who is familiar with criminal investigations said that it was a horrible mistake for the police to come out immediately and say that no foul play was suspected before the investigation took place. These are small town cops who are not used to international attention.
Dude111 03-01-2025, 02:32 AM I think they were trying to keep people from panicking but they should have known better!
biffbronson 03-01-2025, 09:03 AM I would think they'd likely have had regular contact with family & friends, so for "possibly even up to a couple weeks" to have passed since their deaths seems strange. I exchange emails with my brother practically every day, even though we dislike each other...!
If a lot of time did pass, it could explain why one dog died -- maybe less healthy than the others?
rusty spike 03-01-2025, 04:24 PM I was thinking double suicide, but we'll just wait for the ME report.
Dude111 03-01-2025, 05:36 PM Thats all I can of. But why would they kill thier dog??
Say Gene and his wife were sad...... Why kill the dog??
Caroline13 03-01-2025, 05:59 PM Gene was a Major fav actor in my life....We may ne ver know the Truths....of their deaths.... But 05 yrs,,,what a run he had but the youjg wife. RIP to you all....
Dude111 03-01-2025, 06:47 PM Yes I love Gene also!!
Foggy 03-02-2025, 12:18 PM They have eliminated carbon monoxide poisoning.
They do know that Gene Hackman's pacemaker stopped on February 17 2024.
They have not determined when Betsy Arakawa died, or if any of the pills had anything to do with it
The latest theory:
Gene died of natural causes.
Betsy may have died of overdose
Dog died from lack of food and/or water
These are just a THEORY!
biffbronson 03-02-2025, 04:36 PM Thanks for the updated info. I guess the toxicology report on his wife may eventually help clear up the mystery.
icecream 03-05-2025, 01:32 PM This article from a week ago gives more information. When his pacemaker stopped, shouldn't the company have contacted someone to check on them?
https://variety.com/2025/film/news/gene-hackman-wife-test-negative-carbon-monoxide-pacemaker-stopped-1236323847/
Dude111 03-05-2025, 02:05 PM Ya they should have...... If my friends pacemaker stops they are indeed notified!!
Foggy 03-07-2025, 06:09 PM This still doesn't explain why nobody checked on Gene when his Pacemaker stopped ...

Hantavirus is similar to bubonic plague. It's spread by rodent feces. There was an outbreak (I think) in the 80's in the southwest, maybe similar conditions to where they live.
What I just heard was that she died a week before he did, but he was in such bad shape with Alzheimer's, that he may not have even known it, and his heart gave out some time later. Who knows, he may not have even been cognizant enough to eat by himself after she died.
It doesn't say much for their family, who either didn't call to check on them or didn't follow through with a welfare check when they couldn't get either of them on the phone.
Bonniegirl 03-08-2025, 03:37 AM So very tragic ! My God it's really awful. Really sad ! I really don't have the words to express it!
I had heard of Hantavirus ! Babalu you are correct, it seems to be in the Southwest . The case you are thinking of was in the early 90's on an Indian / Native American reservation I think in Arizona? I saw a documentary about it. Caused by mouse droppings and mouse urine . Little children seemed to be affected the most. So sad and shocking this happened to Mrs. Hackman. And poor Gene and the dog, not passing away from that, but because the person caring for them was stricken with it and passed away !
Again, words can't describe how truly awful this is. I too can't believe Gene's doctors or his health plan/ providers didn't notice the pacemaker not functioning anymore. And why his wife dud not seek medical help, go to a doctor? She must gave known she was very sick? Something more than a flu!
I guess nobody checked on them because they figured she was only 65, and was in good health mentally and physically till this and took good care of Gene. I'm thinking they were private people.
icecream 03-08-2025, 03:46 AM And poor Gene and the dog, not passing away from that, but because the person caring for them was stricken with it and passed away ! One dead dog yet the other two dogs are still living.
Dude111 03-08-2025, 01:26 PM Yes its strange..........

I watched that show on ABC tonight and it was pretty decent. But really nothing new here as they repeat the facts we already knew about the case, and some high lights of his career. It would have been more informative if ABC had gain access to film inside the couple's house where the tragedy occurred instead of just showing few still shots. I am guessing the family members like the Gene and his wife are very reclusive.

I am thinking that dog died due to not having access to water while the other surviving dogs had access to water. Humans can survive without food more than 3 weeks, but not without water past 3 to 4 day mark. I'm guessing that would apply to animals such as dogs also.
