by Rebecca Rubin
Feb. 16, 2025

Captain America: Brave New World delivered a heroic $88.5 million in its box office debut, with domestic ticket sales projected to climb to $100 million through the Presidents Day holiday on Monday.

Despite unfavorable reviews and terrible audience scores, the 35th entry in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe arrived slightly above projections and ranks as the biggest opening weekend of the year.

Overseas, the film collected an additional $92.4 million for a global start of $192.4 million through Monday.

Sony’s Paddington in Peru, the third tale about the marmalade-loving bear, opened in second place with $13 million over the weekend and an estimated $16 million through the four-day holiday frame.

Critics and audiences were charmed by the family film, which boasts a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade on CinemaScore. So far, the third entry has grossed $115 million internationally to date.

Sony’s gory slasher Heart Eyes enjoyed a Valentine’s Day boost. The R-rated movie, following a masked murderer who strikes on the romantic holiday, notched the No. 3 spot with $10 million over the weekend and an estimated $11.1 million through Presidents Day.

Those returns represent an impressive 20% jump from its $8.5 million debut and bring the film’s domestic box office tally to $22.6 million.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s canine crime adventure Dog Man slid to fourth place after spending two weekends at No. 1. The kid-friendly film added $9.73 million over the weekend and an estimated $12.5 million through Monday.

So far, Dog Man has grossed $69.5 million domestically and $84.4 million globally against its $40 million budget.

Rounding out the top five is Ne Zha 2, a Chinese-language animated film that’s become a runaway smash in the Middle Kingdom with $1.6 billion and counting.

The movie, which is playing in just 660 locations, earned $7.3 million over the weekend and an estimated $8.3 million through the holiday.

Captain America: Brave New World Suffers 68% Drop in Second Weekend
by Rebecca Rubin
Feb. 23, 2025

Captain America: Brave New World is losing momentum at the box office, even during a muted winter weekend with hardly any competition.

After a strong $100 million start over the extended Presidents Day holiday frame, Captain America: Brave New World crumbed by 68% in its second weekend with $28.3 million from 4,105 North American theaters.

The Anthony Mackie-led superhero adventure, which remained in first place on box office charts, has generated $141 million domestically and $289.4 worldwide to date.

Second place went to Neon’s gory thriller The Monkey, which generated a bloody-good $14.2 million from 3,200 North American theaters in its opening weekend.

This marks the second biggest debut for Neon following last July’s Longlegs ($22.4 million), both of which were directed by Osgood Perkins.

Sony’s Paddington in Peru, the third adventure about the marmalade-loving bear, dropped to third place with $6.5 million from 3,890 cinemas in its second weekend, declining 49% from its debut.

So far, the family film has grossed $25.2 million at the domestic box office. Like its predecessors, “Paddington in Peru” has been more popular with international audiences and has generated $150 million to date.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s canine crime adventure Dog Man remained at No. 4 with $5.9 million from 3,179 venues.

The kid-friendly film, which dipped 40% from the weekend prior, has amassed $78.7 million domestically and $104 million globally. It cost $40 million.

Rounding out the top five is Chinese-language animated film Ne Zha 2 with $3 million from just 800 theaters in its second weekend. The movie’s domestic tally of $14.7 million is impressive for a foreign language film, but it’s nothing compared to the business the sequel is doing in China.

Ne Zha 2 has become a runaway smash in the Middle Kingdom with $1.7 billion and counting, overtaking Inside Out 2 ($1.66 billion globally) as the biggest animated film in history and eighth-highest grossing release of all time.

Lionsgate’s The Unbreakable Boy stumbled in ninth place with $2.5 million from 1,687 venues. Zachary Levi stars in the faith-based film as the father of a son who is on the autism spectrum and has brittle bone disease.

Audiences were more receptive than critics; it holds an “A” grade on CinemaScore and 48% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Captain America: Brave New World Stays in First Place with $15 Million over Sluggish Oscar Weekend
by Brent Lang
March 2, 2025

Captain America: Brave New World kept its box office crown for the third weekend in a row, earning $15 million for a first place finish.

Its muted victory comes as Hollywood prepares to celebrate itself at the Oscars on Sunday, bringing an end to one of the most tumultuous awards seasons in recent memory.

Despite topping the charts, the Marvel and Disney adventure has struggled to match the success of previous entries in the MCU. It will end the weekend having grossed $163.7 million domestically, a sizable figure for most movies, though a disappointment for this blue chip franchise.

It has benefitted from a lack of competition, having primarily faced off against much lower budgeted indie releases. Globally, the superhero sequel, which cost $180 million to make and tens of millions more to market, has earned $341.8 million.

Focus Features’ Last Breath debuted to $7.8 million, capturing second place. The survival thriller tells the true story of a group of deep sea divers who have to rescue a colleague stranded in the North Sea.

Director Alex Parkinson adapted his 2019 documentary of the same name into a narrative feature.

Coming in third, Neon’s horror comedy The Monkey earned $6.4 million. That was a sharp second weekend drop of nearly 55% for the film, which may reflect its rough word-of-mouth — The Monkey had a C+ grade on Cinema Score.

But given that the film, an adaptation of a Stephen King story, was made for just $10 million, it stands to be profitable having already earned $24.6 million domestically.

Sony’s Paddington in Peru picked up $4.5 million over its third weekend of release to take fourth place. Domestic grosses for the stuffed bear sequel will hit $31.4 million through Sunday.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man rounded out the top five, earning $4.2 million in its fifth weekend of release. The family film has earned $84.1 million domestically.
