Back in the early 2000's we got audited!
The reason - we had two dependents (two grandsons) added from the previous year. We had to prove that we had the right to claim them. It took until Sept. or Nov. to get it all proved. We had to get County Court records to prove it.

_____

In 2022

We had found out we had two liens put on our house.
We didn't even know about them until we applied for a HELOC loan.
We couldn't get the HELOC loan until the liens were paid off.

It turned out it was for taxes owed for two years on our business 15 and 17 years earlier. These two years we had a "net lose" when we had filed "State Taxes" on the business, so we figured we didn't owe anything. The following year we closed the business.

Evidently, we didn't file the State Taxes correctly for those two years.

Then the FUN began when we wanted to PAY OFF THE LIENS.

Since it was the State, we contacted the State. The State had referred us to the Attorney General Office. The Attorney General Office told us we could appeal the liens, but it could take several months. We told them we just wanted to pay them off (total was $126.00 combined) because it was holding up a loan.

The Attorney General Office told us, we would have to contact the County Court and get the case numbers and to PAY THE COURT. The Court also charged a "FEE" for each "LIEN" so that the "LIENS" could be PAID.
The Court gave us a "Certified Copy" to show that the "LIENS" were PAID, for our records. We gave it to the bank, so they could get a copy and we could get our loan.

Never in my life have we had the "runaround" just to get something PAID, that we didn't even knew existed. It took 8 months to get this done.

^LOL. We sure are oddly chummy around here! (clever answer to the previous post!)

No, no IRS audits. Odd stuff, like minor questions from some company auditing health care claims, thru insurance at work.
