Any idea how music was selected back then?

Was it too new of a show to have the Beach Boys music on the show? Were the Beach Boys too controversial? Would the studio have had to pay money to the Beach Boys? Were the Beach Boys too big of stars themselves? I watch the show, and I am not sure it would fit since it's really a girl's show (at least I think so), but they sure were popular during the one season.
