Things have drastically changed for Archie Bunker's longtime next door neighbor, up and coming dry cleaning mogul George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley). After he has secured enough business profits to open up a third dry cleaning store, he makes the decision to "leave Bunkersville in style". Over the objections of his level headed wife Louise aka "Weezy"(Isabel Sanford) and college student son Lionel (Mike Evans), George and his family leave their working class Queens neighborhood (and the Bunkers) behind and "move on up to a deeeeeee-luxe apartment in the sky" on Manhattan's Upper East Side. George and Louise are floored when they meet their new neighbors, who are much more wackier than the ones they left behind. Among them are their British neighbor Harry Bentley (Paul Benedict), who is a translator for the United Nations. There is also happily married interracial couple Tom Willis (Franklin Cover), a book publisher, and his Black wife Helen (Roxie Roker), who are the parents of Lionel's fiancée Jenny Willis (Berlinda Tolbert). There are also frequent visits from George's acid-tongued mother Olivia Jefferson (Zara Cully), who puts down Louise every chance she gets. George and Louise also hire sassy housekeeper Florence Johnston (Marla Gibbs), who putdowns and zingers keep them on their toes.
