Separate Worlds
Pilot Episode
Written By: Lauren & Christina
Separate Worlds Theme Song/ Separate Worlds Intro
EXT: SCHOOL YARD - MORNING
Music fades in as several students crowd the grasses of Piper High School as we see SKYE WOODS, a senior, walking steady with confidence. She smiles and waves to her friends as she passes them.
INT: SCHOOL BUILDING - SAME MOMENT
We see KYLIE WOODS, a sophomore at Piper High School, grabbing items out of a locker, passing students tap her on the shoulder, wave and smile. KYLIE gives a friendly response and turns around, walking towards the commons as if she owned the school.
Skye and Kylie meet up and walk together through the school. Their tone tells us that not only are they sisters, but best friends as well. They continue walking to Skyes car where they get in and crank up the volume on the radio. They enjoy the song as they drive home. They continue to show us how close they are.
INT: WOODS RESIDENCE - MOMENTS LATER
JACK and LISA, who are Skye and Kylies parents, sit in the living room of their home. LISA, who is wearing reading glasses, reads a magazine as JACK watches a baseball game. Skye and Kylie walk in the door, laughing and having a good time. The door shuts behind them and the music cuts off.
SKYE: Hey dad…hi mom.
KYLIE: Hi.
Lisa looks up from her magazine and takes off her glasses.
LISA: Hello girls, how was school?
The girls smirk.
SKYE: Good.
KYLIE: Fun.
SKYE: Bye.
KYLIE: See ya!
The two sisters continue to giggle as they run into the other room. Jack looks away from the TV.
JACK: Now what is so funny?
LISA: And why such the hurry to leave the room? What happened this time?
Skye and Kylie walk back into the living room.
KYLIE: No. Nothing.
SKYE: Just an exciting and exhausting day at school.
Kylie and Skye leave the room again. Her mother loudly and positively asks a question…
LISA: Do good on a big test?
SKYE: (shouting from the other room) HA! YOU WISH!
KYLIE: THAT'D BE THE DAY!
Lisa gives Jack a look. He then returns to his baseball game.
INT: KYLIE AND SKYE'S BEDROOM - LATER THAT NIGHT
The girls are sitting on their beds and having a heavy, and obviously funny conversation as they continue laughing.
SKYE: Oh man…I just…I can't believe you did that.
KYLIE: Well it was fair game, right.
The phone rings once. The girls ignore it.
KYLIE: I mean she said stuff about you first. What was I supposed to do?
SKYE: Hey I'm not complaining.
KYLIE: Yeah…only because you're the one that…
A knock at the bedroom door interrupts their conversation. The mother unhappily enters the room.
LISA: That was Mrs. Tabinskee on the phone.
The two stop laughing and avoid eye contact with their mother. They have trouble holding in slight giggles.
LISA: You know, Gina's mother.
All silence but slight giggles.
LISA: Well, she told me what you two did, don't you have anything to say.
They begin to crack up.
LISA: This isn't funny!!! I expect an explanation. And quick.
Kylie still laughs as Skye calms herself down to respond.
SKYE: Oh come on…it was a…Harmless (laughs)…a harmless prank. Is it our fault she ran and told her mommy? I mean…really be adult.
LISA: ADULT?? You have some nerve preaching about being adult when you're busy putting nair in peoples shampoo bottles! What. What were you thinking? Why would you do that to someone?
Kylie laughs even harder. Her mother points to Kylie.
LISA: Oh you don't even try it. She also told me about the rumors you were spreading. CRABS? That's disgusting! I did not raise you guys to act this way.
Kylie and Skye sit there looking so upset and regretful.
LISA: I am so unbelievably embarrassed. I didn't even know what to say to her mother. What would I expect someone to say to me if their kid sent one of you home to me…BALD!
KYLIE: Ok mom, I understand what we did was really mean. But at least let us tell you why we did it.
LISA: Yes. Please. Humor me.
KYLIE: I overheard Gina yesterday, telling people that Skye was a…slut and that's why Aaron broke up with her. WHICH IS NOT TRUE! And now Gina is going out with Aaron, so I…kind of wanted to turn it around on her.
SKYE: Which is why she said the crab thing.
LISA: Yeah ok that doesn't make it right. And it still doesn't explain the nair thing.
SKYE: Well, Kylie told me what Gina said in lunch and we've got Gym together 4th hour. I heard Gina saying she was going out with Aaron right after school so was going to jump in the shower. And that's when I saw the shampoo bottle.
LISA: Do you have any idea how pathetic and insanely jealous you probably look now.
SKYE: WHAT! NO! People love us cause of that.
KYLIE: Yeah we're GODS.
LISA: Oh really well I hope it was worth it because she said by tomorrow she'd be sure you were out of school for ten days. BOTH OF YOU.
The girls seem sorrowful. The mother angrily walks out of the room and slams the door. Kylie and Skye look at each other with straight faces. They then begin to giggle.
SKYE: It was worth it, wasn't it?
KYLIE: Yeah it was!
The two begin to crack up, lie on the bed, and kick their feet like little girls.
INT: KYLIE AND SKYES BEDROOM - MIDNIGHT
Skye and Kylie are asleep on their beds. We over hear an argument between the parents in the other room.
JACK V.O: No! I don't care. That's not what we're going to do. They are our little girls.
LISA V.O: Jack…they are all grown up. They are not little anymore, they are 16 and 18 year old women.
Meanwhile Skye hears the noise and begins to wake up. She sits up and rubs her eyes. She walks over to her parent's room.
EXT: PARENTS BEDROOM - SAME MOMENT
Skye puts her ear against the door and ease drops.
LISA V.O: They will never learn…you've gotta put your foot down before it's to late.
INT: PARENTS BEDROOM- SAME MOMENT
We see Jack and Lisa as they continue arguing.
JACK: To late for what?
LISA: For the real world. They have become like this evil tag team and one day they are going to mess with the wrong people.
JACK: These are your children. What's gotten into you?
LISA: What's gotten into me? WHAT'S GOTTEN INTO ME? I am sick of the phone calls Jack! The phone calls from school telling me what they've done wrong this week.
Lisa calms down and puts her hands on Jacks chest.
LISA: Look…it's not like it would be forever. There is only 3 months left of school. We'll let them finish the year up there.
JACK: We can't do that to Skye, she's graduating, it's her senior year she's not going to want to leave now.
LISA: If we don't, then she might not graduate at all.
JACK: Well what about Kylie? We can't make her switch schools now…and then make her come back next year. That's too much for her.
LISA: Jack…we have no choice.
EXT: PARENTS BEDROOM - SAME MOMENT
Skye stands outside the door looking upset and confused. She tucks her hair behind her ear…and walks away.
INT: SKYE AND KYLIE'S BEDROOM - 3AM THAT NIGHT
Skye and Kylie are sitting up, talking.
KYLIE: So, they didn't say where they wanted to send us?
SKYE: No…and I couldn't catch any clues from what I did hear.
KYLIE: I can't believe that mom wants to get rid of us. I had no idea that's how she felt. I guess we pushed her to far.
SKYE: Hey…don't sweat it. Come on, lets get some sleep.
Skye turns out the light. Room is black…music fades in (I will survive)
INT: SKYE AND KYLIE'S BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER
Room is black.
SKYE: We have to leave!
KYLIE: What?
Skye turns the light back on, she is sitting up. Kylie turns to face her.
SKYE: We have to go.
KYLIE: Yeah I know, you just told me the whole story, it's messed up.
SKYE: No, we gotta run away!
KYLIE: What? Where we gona go?
SKYE: Somewhere better than they'll be sending us. It'll be fun. Come on, lets just pack and get the hell out of here before they wake up.
The girls pause for a moment. Then they begin to walk around the room and pack as they do a funny synchronized dance.
EXT: FRONT YARD - MORNING
We see Skye and Kylie, with pillows and blankets. They are sleeping. As the camera pans out, we see their bags laying all over the yard. Standing over them…their parents. Arms crossed, looking around, confused. The girls begin to wake up. Kylie jumps.
KYLIE: I WILL SURVIVE!
She looks around trying to figure out where she was and why.
LISA: What?
Skye jumps up.
SKYE: We went to get the cat.
JACK: What cat?
SKYE: That cat.
Skye points into one direction.
SKYE: Over…there…
And then she points in two other directions.
LISA: whose cat?
SKYE: Her cat.
KYLIE: UGH…don't ask me so many questions in the morning.
Kylie lies back down and puts a pillow over her head.
INT: WOODS RESIDENCE - MOMENTS LATER
The front door opens, Kylie and Skye walk in yawning and rubbing their eyes. Following them, their parents, holding all their bags. The girls fall onto the couch as if exhausted. Lisa and Jack put the bags down. Jack sits next to Skye and Lisa sits next to Kylie. They try sitting the girls up.
JACK: Skye come on, get up.
LISA: Kylie, what's wrong? Why were you guys sleeping outside with all these bags?
SKYE: Because you're leaving us.
LISA: What?
KYLIE: She means, cause you're making us leave.
JACK: What do you mean?
KYLIE: Skye overheard you two arguing last night about sending us away for the rest of the school year.
LISA: Oh sweetie…it's not a bad thing.
JACK: Yeah, we have your best interest at heart.
LISA: You need this trip. It could be fun. You might even like it.
Skye gets up, and walks away.
SKYE: Yeah well your not supposed to just give up on your kids.
LISA: Look, you're the ones that messed up.
Kylie stands up.
KYLIE: It's not like we killed someone, geezer! And besides, you're the ones that raised us! But hey, if you want to just go and get rid of us like that, then fine…we don't need you either.
Kylie walks away. Jack gives Lisa an "I told you so face".
LISA: Oh shut up Jack!
Lisa walks away.
JACK: Wa'….I didn't say anything.
INT: BUS STATION - NEXT DAY
Lisa takes tickets from the clerk and turns to give them to Kylie and Skye.
LISA: Ok…your bus leaves in about ten minutes so…..
Lisa holds out her arms. The girls just stand there.
LISA: Are you not gonna give me a hug? I'm your mother.
KYLIE: Exactly!
LISA: Well aren't you gonna miss me?
SKYE: Why? Your not gonna miss us. This makes you happy.
KYLIE: Yeah, this is what you want isn't it?
They turn away from Lisa. Lisa puts her arms down and gets tears in her eyes. The girls hug their father.
KYLIE: We love you.
SKYE: We'll miss you.
JACK: I'll miss you guys too.
Kylie and Skye grab their bags from the floor and head towards the bus. After reaching a couple of steps they put their bags down and turn around to give their mother a hug. She hugs them back.
LISA: I'll see you soon.
KYLIE: Yeah…
SKYE: Bye.
Skye and Kylie walk to the bus. They hand a man their tickets and turn to wave to their parents. Their parents wave back. They get on the bus. Jack looks upset.
LISA: Don't worry, this is going to be good for them.
JACK: Good for them? Have you even thought this through?
LISA: Yeah…why?
JACK: Well your sending them away to a new school where you think they won't be tempted by popularity to do bad things. So you send them to live with Denise.
LISA: Yeah…it's a small town…no trouble there.
JACK: So you decide to send them to their twenty-eight year old, party hardy, cousin.
The bus starts to pull away. Lisa gets an "OH NO" face. She panics and starts chasing it. It gets away. Lisa comes back to Jack out of breathe, she puts her hands on her knees and looks down, trying to catch her breath. Jack begins to laugh.
JACK: Yeah like that was gona help…
Lisa looks up at him.
INT: BUS - MOMENTS LATER
Music fades in, as we see the girls in their seats, getting situated. The announcer comes on the over speaker.
