I think this is the episode where Wally and Eddie tie a chain to Lumpy's car. When Lumpy gets in the car and tries to drive it, the front or either the back of the car comes off. I can't remember if it was the front of the car or the back. I think that's the episode.

Yeah, that's the one Jenny. In this ep, Wally plays a trick on Lumpy, tying the back bumper of Lumpy's car to a tree with a chain. When Lumpy tries to drive the car off, he ends up pulling off the car's bumper. I think Wally's actual intention was to just keep Lumpy's car from moving, but it kinda went wrong...This is also the episode that TVLand keeps skipping. I saw it once a long time ago, but ever since then, they never show this episode. I wonder why that is?

Just a guess...Just a guess- Maybe people were doing pranks after seeing that episode. You know how some people are. If somebody saw a movie where one of the main character goes and smashes eggs at people, some idiot will try to copy it. I'm guessing that is why tvland doesn't show the episode because of the fact some idiot thought it would be cool to tie a chain to somebody's car. *shrugs*

Minor correction: the chain is attached to the rear axle of Lumpy's car. When he drives off (after Wally and Eddie cross the street to use a neighbor's phone and Eddie convincingly fakes Julie Foster's voice to ask Lumpy to come over and help her with her homework), the chain pulls the entire rear axle, with wheels attached, off the car. I don't believe that would actually work, but it makes for a funny show.

Not sure why this would be such a bad example to impressionable young minds, since Ward makes it mighty clear that this was an unacceptable prank, and Wally has to go over there and fix the car or help pay for it.

I'm glad I taped it long ago, since TVLand always skips it in the rotation.

Oh my gosh, I've never seen this episode either!!! That's not fair!!! Does Eddie really sound like Julie Foster? I'd give anything to see that!!!!

No, Eddie does not sound like Julie Foster, it's just that Lumpy was too dumb to even recognize it was Eddie. You know, he's one of those who doesn't get calls from girls very often, so when he heard the name of Julie Foster, he believed it was her immediately. :D I love the trick they play of putting a cloth over the phone's receiver to make the voice of the person muffled. lol

I know it, this is such a classic epiosde, and yet, TV Land seems to always skip over it. I don't see what's so harmful in this episode, geez, they played it once before during a Fandemonium marathon (thank god I taped it, too). :)

I thought I had written a synopsis of this ep not too long ago, but it wasn't easy to find. But here it is, slightly modified:

Lumpy is hiding behind the shrubs near the Cleaver house as Wally and Eddie walk out. Eddie tries to start his car, but a cherrybomb explodes under his hood, then Lumpy comes out from hiding with a silly laugh. So Wally tries to start his car and a cherrybomb was planted in his also. At the dinner table, Ward is amused when he hears about Lumpy's joke and starts to tell about some of the jokes he did when he was young, but June shakes her head and he says, "Oh, I forgot-- I'm not supposed to have ever had any fun." Eddie shows up later with some suggestions on jokes to pull on Lumpy in revenge. Wally doesn't go for his first 2, so then Eddie says to take Ward's tow-chain and hook it to the rear axle of Lumpy's car and wrap the other end around a strong tree, so then Lumpy will be sitting there burning rubber and not moving from his driveway. So they do that the next day, with Eddie phoning Lumpy, to get him to come out and drive, by using a fake soft voice and saying he is Julie Foster and wants Lumpy to come and help her with her math. So Lumpy walks smugly out to his car with a tie and sportcoat, with Wally and Eddie spying from behind some bushes. He starts the car and when the chain is taut it pulls the rear axle off, and Lumpy 's car slides into the street. Eddie and Wally change from their big grins to pale fear and run away.

Fred comes out and sees that the towchain is marked "W.Cleaver." Lumpy lets it slip that "Wally and Eddie must have done this to me." But when Fred asks him why he mentioned Eddie, Lumpy squirms out. That evening Fred takes the chain to Ward and explains about the damaged car, so then Ward knows what happened and why. Wally makes the suggestion that he and Eddie borrow some tools and try to put the rear axle back on Lumpy's car the next Saturday, since they don't have money to pay a mechanic to fix it. Eddie comes by and at first he still insists that they can't be tied in with the sabotage, but then he hears Ward tell Fred on the phone that Eddie and Wally will be there early Saturday to start the job.

While they are working Fred comes out and scolds them for being very "juvenile" with their practical jokes. Eddie, with Lumpy standing by, says, "Yes sir; it's just about as juvenile as Clarence putting those cherrybombs in our cars." Fred then orders Lumpy to help them with the task, since he started the round of jokes, but Wally says he and Eddie are coming along pretty good, so "please don't make Clarence help us." Fred says he sees their point. The tag scene is Lumpy stopping by Wally's asking for help to get his top down, which is stuck because of his big tuba in the back seat. Then he says he talked to Julie to tell her why he didn't make it to her house to help her with her math, and she just laughed and said she didn't know what he was talking about. Then Eddie demonstrates the voice he used, which would have fooled no one on the show but Lumpy.

I don't want to be the sourpuss of the group, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. I've been following the 'Archie Bunker's Place' schedule on tvland.com and they've made minor changes on that schedule. Like when the rotation starts over, they had episode #3 airing but then they edited it and put #1 and #2 before #3. They could be airing, but don't get your hopes too high if they decide to change it. I know we are talking about two different shows, but you never know.

Has TV Land ever listed "Wally's Practical Joke" before? If not, we may be in for a treat, because I don't think that TV Land has ever aired this episode!

I checked the schedule again and it definitely is on the schedule for Nov 18. It is not in the rotation order though, It is being shown after ep 233. I hope this is not a misprint because I would love to get that episode in my collection. I will set my VCR for that day and hope I get "Wally's Practical Joke".

That's a good idea anyway. If they do show it, you'll have it. If it was an error in the guide and they don't show it, then you can always record over the episode that they did show

I just don't understand this whole deal about this episode! I mean they've shown it before, because I've seen it and I remember it distinctly! It was a long time ago, but I know they showed it! The only channel I've ever seen LITB on is TVLand, and since I've seen this ep, I know they have shown it before! I hope it's true and they are going to show it, because it's a hillarious ep!!!

I've got it taped from TVLand, along with every other episode (unfortunately I taped them on ep mode using those stupid cheap RCA tapes that you get 10 for $10). Trust me, if you're gonna tape something for posterity, get a good quality tape and tape it on sp mode. My tapes from TVLand are only about 3 years old and they already have lost some of their sound quality! Disgusting!

But, as it pertains to this episode, it is hilarious, and well worth the watching/taping. Personally, I loved the last season of the show, and this was one of the highlights.

I wonder if they knew it was the last episode. Anyone know? I looked very carefully at their demeanor, and it didn't have the trace of underlying sadness one see in the last few eps of some series. Maybe they finished shooting the season and only found out during the summer that there was to be no more.

I'm not sure if they knew it was gonna be the last episode. I'd say they did though. It'd be weird thinking of what they would be doing if they had another season. Would Wally and the gang actually get to experience college or would the writers make them repeat their senior year again? Whether or not they knew it was gonna be it, they did choose a nice point to end it on.

OKAY, slow down here. Wally's Practical Joke is not the last episode. Family Scrapbook is the last episode. TV Land SKIPPED it Family Scrapbook. It should be noted that Wally's Practical Joke was also aired out of order. Yesterday (Sunday) at 5 and 5:30 they aired episodes 232 and 233 and Wally's Practical Joke is 231 while Family Scrapbook is 234. At least this is the numbering according to TV Land. For some reason they aired it out of order.

Here's a link to a complete and accurate episode list with airdates (Note production numbers) The Clothing Drive was flimed much earlier in the 6th season:

exactly!!! and to say the least, i believe that these were one of the many episodes filmed WAY before the end of the season becuase (of course only I and brit probably noticed it) but Barbara's hair is her long and flipped out manner, while in the begingin credits and some of the episodes (clothing drive i think is one) she has the short hair, now i dont think that barbara's hair grows any faster than most people's hair, so i have a hunch that the episodes that have her flipped out longer hair are from the earlier parts of filming and her shorter hair is from the end, OR i could be wrong and she got it cut short, but grew it out to be longer, but then why wouldn't we have seen in between stages of her hair, okay, haha, point being!!!!!!! I think that they filmed this episode way before the series was to air it's last episode.

I too agree that it was a good place to stop, wally had graduated high school and beaver was entering high school, although, i really wonder what the show would have done with wally away at college, the series never really mentioned exactly where he was too go except they mentioned state (the college ward went to) a lot, but i also did miss the fraternity episode, so perhaps in there, wally had a college picked out. I think that it would have been really neat to see wally somewhat living away from home and interacting with new people, and new college instances (i.e. co-ed dorms, something i look quite forward too ;) ) and then beaver in high school, you know, he always was the one getting into messes and letting other people convince him to do things that were wrong, he'd probably have brought beer to he all night part  i was partially kidding on that one... okay, i'll shut up now!

About the ep...it had been so long since I saw this I had completely forgotten how FUNNY this ep was! I cracked up when the axle came off and Eddie says "OH NO!" and he and Wally haul butt to get away! I laughed my butt off!

I still haven't seen this episode yet! Since they're in the final season now on TVLand I know it's coming up. I want to make sure I see it this time. If anyone knows exactly when this episode will air please let me know. It seems that a lot of ppl in here really like this episode and there's something about the way Wally laughs. Well, I really want to see this episode. Well, with my luck it'll probably be on when I'm in Disney World in 2 weeks!

As you all can see, this is a nearly year old thread. I was wondering as I read it if most of you mangaged to catch that episode when it aired on TV Land. It was aired two or three months ago. I think it's a funny episode. I can't say that it crossed my mind that there was a chance that it would cause an outbreak of similar pranks to explode across the USA. :talk: :)

It really wasn’t Wally’s Practical Joke it was Eddie’s he thought it up. Also that woman was very trusting to let two men into her house like that. She says “This isn’t a way to get me to buy magazines I hope.” They could have attacked her like the violence we see today. Back then we trusted everyone who came to your door except Ted Bundy.

I like when Fred tells Lumpy to go inside while the boys are fixing his car. Lumpy asks Fred what should he do inside like he had nothing to do. He could study his Calculus. Lumpy dressed like an old man with dress pants and a sweater.

The lady who let them use the phone says, "You look like nice young men." (Or words to that effect.) She even left the room!

Different time...we used to leave our doors unlocked. Small town life.

When Fred sent Lumpy back in (after Wally begged Fred not to make him help), they could have had a few extra lines: Lumpy--I don't have anything to do. Fred--Read your comic books. Lumpy--I've read 'em all. Fred--Then watch Capt. Kangaroo. I don't care--get inside! Just don't practice your tuba--your mother's trying to sleep.

This is one of my favorite S6 episodes. One of the funniest parts is when Beaver rigged Wally's bed. The second S6 trick he played on him--the other one was in the party spoiler episode, where he got him with the handshake buzzer.

Beaver should have gone along on the Lumpy prank. He could have tailed them and hid close by.

I've been merging old threads again. Thought it might be interesting to read thru some old stuff on this episode.

Reading some of these old posts, a lot were noting how TV Land skipped this episode in rotation a lot. I remember that!
Also a lot of posts about VCRs and taping. How times change...

This is a good episode and didn’t know that TV Land skipped it.

After Lumpy’s car is stuck at the end of the driveway and Fred finds the chain Lumpy starts to go in the house. Fred-“Where are you going?” Lump- “ I thought Mom could get me some ice cream.” Fred- “Get the heap out of the street!” Something like that.

Love how Ward is sitting in the chair and turns around to look at Eddie while he’s weaseling out of fixing the car.

Yeah that was great. Eddie's saying something like, they can't pin that on us, etc. Ward stands up, and they hadn't seen him from the hall. And of course Eddie changes his tune.

This is one of the few later episodes written by Connelly and Mosher.
