What if the creators of Cheers went with their first choice and hired Fred Dwyer(Hunter) instead of Ted Danson for the role of Sam Malone? Do you think Cheers would still be a successful show?

It's so hard to imagine anyone other than Ted Danson playing Sam that it is difficult to say.

Just based on Fred Dryer's two appearances on the show, I'd have said he would have possibly been decent, but it's hard to figure on the chemistry.

Cheers did so bad in its first year, that if the chemistry wasn't there, I feel it may have been cancelled after a couple seasons.

Basically, who knows?

I'm not sure but I think if Fred Dryer was Sam then Diane would have been played by someone else since they auditioned as couples, I believe.

I don't know Fred might have done ok.

Wasn't Julia Duffy one of the people that auditioned for the Diane role? I remember reading that somewhere.

Yea, they don't seem to match well together, and they wouldn't really match well with the rest of the cast.
