View Full Version : ABC regains the rights to All My Children and One Life To Live
Did anybody read about this? Back in 2016, Prospect Park's lawsuit got dismissed and ABC now has the rights again to both of these shows.
The shows will return to ABC in 2019.

That's a shame. Somebody must have did that when adding the source, but now it's not true at all.
TV Guy 09-28-2018, 09:56 PM The days of networks producing original scripted series for daytime are coming to an end. Even primetime is going to have less original scripted series: primetime ratings are down 15-20% from last fall.

That's not good at all. How are the daytime ratings doing?

It would be nice to see some of the old soap operas come back.

They did that a few years back with General Hospital they ran a some of the Luke & Laura episodes.

They also aired a 14-hour “One Life To Live” marathon on New Year’s Day in honor of the show coming to an end in 2012.
If we can’t get them on TV, hopefully there’s a streaming network that can be created specifically for classic Soaps of all kind.
loaferman 01-18-2019, 02:14 PM I would love to see some classic soaps again. I suspect the cost of acquiring the episodes would take a lot of subscribers. Seeing that it did not sustain a cable channel it isn't likely. They could have the full run of Dark Shadows and many of the ABC episodes of The Edge of Night. I know one network aired episodes of "The Doctors" for a bit. I wonder how many episodes of Guiding Light and As the World Turns are still around? These shows could provide years of programming. If it happened they'd probably show a whole week of episodes back-to-back. Part of the fun used to be having to wait, sometimes from Friday to Monday seemingly made the weekend slower if they left off at a really good cliffhanger.
If you go on Archive.org, there's a good selection of All My Children episodes there.

loaferman 02-15-2019, 12:53 PM I think there is an audience for soap reruns. I have most of Edge of Night from 1979 to 1984 when it ended. The cost factor may be too much to get around. I don't know if SoapNet paid residuals to the actors or writers. So many soaps were erased to save on tape, nobody ever dreamed that a day's episode would ever be seen again after it aired. Even when VCR's came along only Dark Shadows got all the episodes released eventually on DVD. I would think the concept could be tried in a Netflix format but I would want a minimum number of subscribers committed first. I don't see it working, but it has to be cheaper than making new daily episodes.

I'm amazed any soaps still exist honestly. They can run a cheap to make talk show. I would think game shows would be cheaper than new daily soap episodes but they seem to be out of favor with daytime these days. I remember when all day was game shows and soaps.
autbey 03-28-2019, 11:45 AM They should put the entire runs on Hulu.
They should put the entire runs on Hulu.
I can see that happening.
TV Guy 04-08-2019, 05:45 PM As a previous poster mentioned, there are residual rights to deal with. Some production companies weren’t thinking about residuals for actors when they wrote soap contracts 30 years ago. Same for music.
The other expense is digitization. Older episodes are on bulky videotape and they have to be converted to digital. That costs money, and that will generally only happen if there is a big audience for the show to be run on TV run and/or DVD release.
Look at “The Farmer’s Daughter”. Granted, it’s not a soap. Antenna TV wanted to run it. But neither Sony nor Antenna TV wanted to pay for new prints to be struck from the original negatives, because they don’t feel the potential audience justifies the investment. So it remains in the vault.

Yet some entity paid for The Paul Lynde Show to be remastered for Antenna TV. Granted, it was only a season of episodes.
It didn't look like it was mastered from original elements. My guess is that it was at some previous time it was mastered to videotape. I don't think any old Screen Gems show has been remastered from new prints derived from original negatives, except season one of Hazel (and possibly the Partridge Family).
As far as the soaps go, some of the videotapes were probably wiped. Even for a well-preserved show like Dark Shadows, they had to rely on kinescope films for several episodes when it was mastered to DVD (and when it was shown in its entirety on Sci-Fi).
TV Guy 04-12-2019, 09:51 PM Well, there’s that, too. ABC regularly wiped its soaps until the late 70s. The only reason that the first five years of “Ryan’s Hope” survived is because ABC didn’t own the show. But the majority of the 1970s episodes of AMC and OLTL are gone.
Hawkee 05-02-2019, 05:42 AM When it comes to soap operas ABC has always been known as the soap opera king and with All My Children and One Life To Live they have always been classic soap operas. And All My Children was the soap opera that introduced people to the character Erica Kane who was played by the talented Susan Lucci and Kelly Ripa who played the character Hayley on the soap opera and One Life To Live was the soap which introduced fans to actor James DePaiva and his wife Kassie DePaiva and seeing that ABC has regained the rights to both soap operas again means that ABC will most likely put All My Children on DVD and One Life To Live will also get a DVD release soon because you don't hardly see soap operas on DVD and it would be a nice treat for fans of All My Children and One Life To Live. But one thing that would work for ABC is another chance to revive Soapnet but this time show it exclusively on Hulu or bring it back as an app where fans could get a free trial first then all soap opera episodes would be priced cheap at $1,99 for members and it would work miracles. But two other ABC soaps that would be great to see on DVD would be Loving /The City and the General Hospital spin-off Port Charles and the Loving DVD sets would have Loving on one disc and The City on the last disc along with a new version of the Loving theme from 1993 performed by American Idol's Clay Aiken because he sounds like Jeffrey Osborne and Clay would do the theme song justice. Would DVD sets of One Life To Live and All My Children work well for fans?
