Tony Todd Dies: Candyman Actor was 69
by Erik Pedersen
November 8, 2024

Tony Todd, the 6-foot-5 actor known for his distinctive voice with 100s of credits in film, TV and video games, died November 6 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 69.

His reps confirmed the news to Deadline but did not provide a cause of death.

Among his first screen roles was playing the heroin-addicted Sergeant Warren in Oliver Stone’s Best Picture Oscar-winning Vietnam War classic Platoon.

He starred in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead as Ben and then went on to what is perhaps his best known role in Candyman (1992) — a character he reprised for 3 more films.

Todd's television credits include roles on "Chuck", "Dead of Summer", "24", and "The Flash".

His other horror film appearances include the Final Destination franchise, the Hatchet franchise, Wishmaster, and Tales from the Hood 3. His final role will be in Final Destination: Bloodlines, which is currently in post-production, set for a 2025 release.

:(

I really was a horror icon. Though I'd seen him in stuff in the 80s not knowing who he was though, it wasn't until 1990 seeing him as Ben in the Night Of The Living Dead remake at the theater that I really became aware of who he was. Also around that same time seeing him in the lesser known Voodoo Dawn where he plays the villain in that.

This is Todd's episode of Adam Green's Scary Sleepover.

I'm really hoping that the new Final Destination film goes into Bludworth the Coroner's true purpose. Tony Todd really made an impression despite being in the films for no more than 5 minutes.

There's been some theories that he is a personification of Death, like a Grim Reaper type, or someone else who managed to "cheat death". Todd and screenwriter/creator Jeffrey Reddick have said that these fan theories are not true, but they would not go into further details.

I mean, what "normal person" talks like him?
