View Full Version : Favorite Lucy-Desi Movie?
buddy love 10-13-2002, 09:57 PM What is your favorite Lucy-Desi movie? They made three together. Too Many Girls (1940) The Long, Long, Trailer (1954) and Forever, Darling (1956). I like them all but I really enjoy "Trailer" becuz the humor is so much like ILL. They really show a lot of affection in this. Also, Desi is very funny in his own right. The scene with him in the shower is one of the highlights (along with the scene of Lucy in the trailer trying to prepare dinner while Desi is driving). A very good film.
dawsongirl 10-13-2002, 11:22 PM My fav is Too Many Girls. I guess I like cheesy musicals. :D
Mickey 10-14-2002, 04:51 AM I've only seen Too Many Girls, but I like it. It's daft, with those big, spontaneous song and dance numbers, but that's part of it's appeal. Desi gets a good drum playing piece, too. At the end, when Lucy is supposed to be staring into the eyes of the hero, it looks to me like she's looking past him, and watching Desi instead, which I find rather amusing.

Ricardos4ever 10-14-2002, 12:55 PM I would have to say that my favorite is "The Long, Long Trailer". Yes, it is like ILL, but that's why it's great. It was like seeing Lucy and Ricky in color -- and on location! "Forever Darling" wasn't as good because the characters weren't like Lucy and Ricky at all -- they fought too much and the script wasn't all that great. Although, I must say that I liked it better than I thought I would. Everyone was making it sound bad, but I wasn't bored or anything. Still, it is a great movie to see if you love Lucy and Desi. With "Too Many Girls", I didn't like the story all that much but there were some great scenes, like the little dance scene with Ann Miller and Desi. It was cool to see Desi and Lucy looking so young, but I wish that they had a least some sort of exchange of dialogue. All that we got was that little fainting scene which was kinda stupid. There was really no point to it. As for the part at the end that Mickey mentioned, I'm going to have to go back and take a closer look at that!
~LadyJess~ 10-14-2002, 03:36 PM The only one I've seen is The Long, Long Trailer but it's a great movie. As Ricardos4ever said, it was like seeing Lucy and Ricky in color and on location. My favorite scene is when Lucy is in the trailer cooking and Desi is driving and just singing away while Lucy is sliding all around, getting food all over herself.
QueenOfTheGypsies 10-14-2002, 04:18 PM I can't decide between Too Many Girls and The Long, Long Trailer. I guess they're both my favorite. :)
Mickey 10-14-2002, 05:16 PM If you go to Amazon.Com, they mention a possible release of The Long, Long Trailer on DVD. There's an option to sign up to be informed of when the release date will be, and they say they'll pass the numbers onto the company as proof of how many people want the release. Sounds like a good possibility. I don't know what sort of extras there'd be likely to be, since I doubt anybody is still around to do a commentary, but given the amount of photgraphs and magazine articles there must be enough material for a decent stills gallery.

That would be so great if they released it on DVD! I'll definitely sign up! :)

Wow! DVDs rock!
SPLAIN 10-15-2002, 11:06 AM Welcome Mickey and thanks for the info on the DVD, i only have one of her movies on DVD and that's Yours mine and ours. As for the question, i hated Too Many Girls, it's only memorable because this is where they met, Forever Darling stinks, but Trailer is the best, and yes, seing them in color the first time was the best part! Before you all pounce on the comments above, i know they met when she made Dance Girl Dance, and Forever darling could have been funnier, the script stank! Again, it was nice to see her in color and so glamorous looking!
Will and Grace Fanatic 10-15-2002, 04:11 PM the only one that I have ever seen is the Long,Long Trailer. So I'd have to say that one. Because I loved that movie.

I never liked Forever Darling. The script is so weak. I love Trailer because, like others have said, it's a lot like an I Love Lucy script. Very fun and lighthearted. FD was pretty depressing, and considering the fact that it probably mirrored Lucy and Desi's relationship at that point, that makes it all the more depressing.
I think the reason I love Too Many Girls isn't so much that it was a fabulous movie. I like it more for the sentimental value. I guess I'm a romantic, but I love watching Lucy and Desi as they were in the early stage of their relationship. My favorite part of the movie is when Desi first sees Lucy, and faints at the sight of her. Very romantic!
SPLAIN 10-16-2002, 02:58 PM Romantic yes, but real? Hey, i'm the biggest romance nut around, i've seen Desi take her hand in the Hollywood Anniversary so many times and it still makes me melt, when they dance together after that big fight, gets me every time. Forever Darling was so bad they actually asked Bob and Madelyn to write that raft bit at the end, as the rest of the film had so little humor, and you're right it was an actual mirror of their lives at home, that part where they ask each other where they went wrong gets me also, every single time!
SPLAIN 10-16-2002, 03:18 PM Just came from E Bay, there is this series of seven photos taken from the set of Trailer, but watch it if you go look, you'll never see the film the same way again, it shatters your illusions when you see that it's really just a set!
LucyCrazy 10-23-2002, 05:47 PM My Favorite I guess would have to be the Long Long Trailer. :D They fight alot :argue: in the movie but it is very funny and well done. I have never seen Too Many Girls but I really want to. Is Too many girls worth my time or is it dumb? I kinda want to see it because it is where they first met and i thought it would be cool. I thought Forever Darling was okay but the script was pretty weak.
 :happyface  :seeya:  puke:  :bye:
CHUCK T 10-23-2002, 09:38 PM Too Many Girls is pretty good. Lucy looks great, and Des looks very young and thinner than during the ILL days. In the movie he literally falls for Lucy.
SPLAIN 10-24-2002, 09:58 AM It's ok if you like old fashioned Hollywood musicals, but if they weren't in it, the movie would be forgotten by now! Agree also about Forever Darling, Lucy never looked better, and in color too, but the script stinks!
Mickey 10-24-2002, 10:00 AM And Desi has a great Conga drum scene, which generally makes it worthwhile.
It's a good film to see how things were being done in those days, and an interesting little piece of history in that respect. The size of the song and dance numbers is impressive, although bits are pretty tacky. Endearingly fake scenery, some equally endearing bad acting, and people who keep looking at the camera as though they've forgotten that they're no longer on stage and are expecting to see an audience sitting there watching them. The idea of all those songs about football and winning games is kinda sweet too. They take football seriously though, don't they! The scene when the mob catches Desi after finding out that he and the others won't be playing in the big match looks genuinely rough!

SPLAIN 10-24-2002, 11:10 AM The producer of the show on Broadway and Desi both said the film was not as good as the show had been on Broadway, and yes, at least the film is remarkable as a great example of why Desi was a sensation in New York at that time, he would pack them in to any night club with his no holding back performances which were the talk of the town back then, and when he went to Hollywood, it was the same story, nobody could take over a crowd and give his all in every performance like he did!
Ricardos4ever 10-24-2002, 06:28 PM Yes, he was a great performer. Even Lucy was taken so much by his performance when she saw him in "Too Many Girls" on broadway that she went to the nightclub where he was performing directly after the show. Too bad it was his night off, or they would have met a lot sooner! But I find it interesting that she never cared much for his singing - she said that he had more volume than tone!
CHUCK T 10-24-2002, 09:08 PM With all due respect--Lucy should talk. But seriously, I like Desi's singing, sure he isn't the greatest but he had a nice quality and some episodes of ILL are highlights becuz of his singing (and the sentiment behind it, too) such as "We're having a baby, My baby and Me" and "Cheek to Cheek" sang very lovingly to Lucy. Not to mention his wonderful Latin numbers.
SPLAIN 10-25-2002, 09:57 AM Yep, that was bad for her to say that, he mentionned in his book that she could say things that would hurt him deeply, but then again, he hurt her too, so that's why she made comments like that. Yes, you're right Chuck, the pot calling the kettle black! If his singing wasn't good, the records would not have sold and besides he put his heart in his singing the way she put hers in her comedy, they had more of a love for performing than anything else, so it enhanced their performances. We're having a baby is a so so song, but the emotion behind it makes it the best song ever on the show!
*ShortCake* 10-28-2002, 01:42 PM Mine is The Long Long Trailer & Forever Darling.. but if I had to choose between the two it would be The Long Long Trailer.. :)
SPLAIN 10-28-2002, 03:12 PM Ashley, did you see Strictly Ballroom? The only reason i watch Forever Darling is because she looks so good in color and everything because the movie is terrible!
