I wasn't in the cast. As a matter of fact, that was my first show as a stage manager. I also built the set, which was a real pain. So much moulding and fancy trim! Plus, I never actually saw the show, The massive set we built extended out past the arch, so myself and the crew had to sit behind the set and watch everything on a monitor. Luckily, there aren't many set changes, so we got to stay put most of the time and just listen.
Since we couldn't get on to the set from the sides, we built special panels with hinges into the set so that the crew could come through the upstage walls!

Not to many community/regional theater groups do this show, which is a shame becasue it is very entertaining, not to mention a bit educational.

WOW... okay, are we talking MOVIE musicals or stage musicals? There is, believe it or not, a HUGE difference. For instance, I love the movie of Grease but LOATHE the stage version. Well, perhaps I'll list my absolute favorite stage musicals, considering they're my first love. There's NOTHING like LIVE theatre.

Those are my top ten as of now. They always change slightly, according to my mood, but my top three almost always remain the same. I love SO many musicals that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to list them all. I really only have an aversion to Andrew Lloyd Webber, though I do enjoy SOME of his work (Joseph and Evita mainly. I enjoy Phantom if you catch me on a good day). I don't DISLIKE his work, I just think its totally overrated and repetitive. Sondheim is PURE genius and yadda-yadda-yadda... lots of you have heard it all before. As for all you Les Mis fans, I don't dislike it ALL, I enjoy Fantine and on a good day, Eponine, but I think it's completely overrated and looooooooong and drawn out and there's only so much I can take of it. LOL.

TJL -- I just reread your post. I did The Pirates of Penzance... I played Mabel. If you knew how many Gilbert and Sullivan's I've done, you'd think I was a fanatic, but I'm really not. I just belonged to a theatre group that only did Gilbert and Sullivan. I've also done The Mikado, Iolanthe, The Gondoliers, HMS Pinafore, Yeoman of the Guard, etc. Sad, really. LOL. I think Gianetta was my favorite part, because she's so cute, and of course, she's a lot like Yum-Yum. Mabel was definitely the most challenging, given I was only 16 when I played the part and that part was NOT written for a teenager.

Ah well... there's my little G&S shpeal. :)

I agree, and then some. I sincerely don't want to offend any Les Mis fans, but I saw this last year, and I just hated it. It went on and on and on. We almost left the theater. The set design was so dreary. I did enjoy quite a few of the songs though.
Again, I'm not trying to rip anyone's favorite here. Feel free to knock the socks off my Phantom obsession. ;)

I had a blast when we did "Pirates." The director really wanted to have some fun with the show, so he let the cast and crew come up with some really funny "shtick" to do throughout the show.
At my suggestion, the Pirate King entered in one scene on a Jet Ski. Got a big laugh. Also, since the ship we built was so big, the only way to get it off the stage was to back it up, so when the ship had to leave, I got the the sound guy to play the "beep-beep" sound a truck makes when it backs up.

Well, I'm only 18. LOL. I was Yum-Yum. I want to play Katisha! She is the most fun... I always get stuck in the God-awful sop leads! Okay, they're not ALWAYS awful... LOL. The only "alto lead" I've ever really had was Adelaide in Guys and Dolls... and lets face it, that wasn't really a SINGING part anyway. LOL. I can belt, damnit... they all just need to give me a chance! So I can sing pretty damn high... I can sing pretty damn low too. LMAO!


Sorry, went off on a bit of a rant. Type casting is VERY frustrating.

TJL -- That's SO funny. Suffice to say, our production was your quasi-Gilbert and Sullivan... no little sound affects added here or there... no cute props. BUT, everyone DID get a kick out the Major General in his little PJ's. They were awfully cute.

As for typecasting- I joke that I always end up someones little sister or the 2nd female lead when it comes to musicals. I can sing but not really high or really low which makes musicals not my strong point. Right now Im playing Josie in "George M!".

I don't know which is the best but my personal favorite musical is "Scrooge" starring Albert Finney.:)

Sometimes, I would leave the theater, drive into the nearby town, hit up McDonald's, a liquor store, and still be back to the theater to eat, and have a few cocktails. One time the director (who was my boss) caught me leaving the theater, he hands me a twenty and says "You've been sneaking out every show and you don't think to ask me if I want anything? Get me some beer!"

I did Camelot my sophomore year! HELLO... longest show ever! It's an epic and it's so fascinating. It was probably my favorite show I've done thus far. I was Guenevere so I was in nearly every scene, aside from like three. The time goes pretty quickly when you're constantly on the stage, but mucho exhausting. It's so great though! I love Camelot and I'm so happy I had the opportunity to play Guenevere. She's a great part... her character changes so drastically throughout the course of the show that it gives the actress a lot of variety and freedom to play around with the role.

I never had a problem with working on the classic shows. Most of them give the cast and crew plenty to do. Some shows I've run crew for kept me moving for three hours straight. Other shows I would sit behind some screnery and read for two hours!
