Some thoughts (https://www.quora.com/Why-hasn-t-Hayley-Atwell-had-a-bigger-career-after-Agent-Carter/answer/Jon-Mixon-1):

She’s a supporting actor, not a lead one - Agent Carter had her as the lead, and it was cancelled after two brief seasons. Her other roles (so far) have had her as one of the cast as opposed to being “up front”. Until or of she gains a better role where she’s the focus, she’ll remain in the background.

Money - She hasn’t been bringing it in. People don’t go to movies or stream them to watch Atwell. If or when they do, she’ll find her roles improving and her box office increasing.

She’s playing in a crowded market - There are sizable number of attractive British female actors in Hollywood at this time and some of them are younger than Atwell, who is 42. If she were a decade or so younger, there would be more room. She isn’t.

She got a “late” start in films - Atwell was 26 when she was in her first feature and that may have 5–10 years later than she should have. At 42, she’s had 16 YEARS to prove herself and it doesn’t appear that she’s spent that time well, MCU aside.

Who’s “Haley Atwell?’ - Seriously. I know her because I have seen all of the films of the MCU and I saw her series Agent Carter. Most people have no idea who she is and that’s after nearly 20 YEARS in Hollywood. If the idea was for her to become more successful, she should have started by becoming more well known.

Beautiful actor.

However at this point failing a MAJOR success in film or on North American television, her career arc looks like it’s trending toward “character/supporting” not “lead/star”.
