Norman Lear wanted Archie and Edith in a new type of show under a different title after season 8. But CBS talked him into keeping Both Archie and Edith into the same format and continuing the show even without Mike and Gloria

It should have ended when the kids moved out. That would have been a great ending. Archie Bunker's Place could have started and Edith could have stuck around for the first season. When Stephanie came it almost appeared they were trying to rework the magic with the Bunker's having a young daughter. Once the kids moved next door the show loses my interest. Once they move to CA the show was over for me.

I need to find why they felt the need to add a kid to the show after 9 years.

Young kids are always added to shows when ratings decline. Without someone else living in the house it would have been the Archie/Edith show. She had to be black or Jewish.

Usually its done when its a family show and kids are still around. This was always an adult show from the start so it was weird to add a kid to the show
