OK...I'am going to be bashed for saying this one...but Jane Curtin DID NOT deserve the 1985 emmy award for best lead actress in a comedy series. She won the 1984 emmy, and I thought that she deserved it, because she delivered some great episodes...but the 1985 season was cleary not her season, and thought that she won just because she had won the previous year. Here were the other nominees:

Phylicia Rashad [The Cosby Show]
Susan Saint James [Kate & Allie]
Shelley Long [Cheers]
Isabel Sanford [The Jeffersons]

Rashad deserved the emmy, because she made such a strong debut as Claire, and the Cosby Show was skyrocketing...and she was one of the main reasons why. Saint James had no chance, and was almost weaker than Curtin. Shelley was OK in the season, but nothing special...while Sanford gave amazing performances in the final season!!!!

RASHAD WAS ROBBED!!!!!!!!

I agree with you. Jane was the right choice for the previous year, but 1985 was a different scenario altogether.
And even thoughCurtin had funnier lines and better comedy value overall, Susan Saint James was always my favourite.
But they worked very well together.
I think it must be very difficult to pick one winner out of a group of talented people for these award shows. Sometimes they make mistakes.
It is good for the viewing public though that there are so many great shows and talented people out there!

Nickelodeon has just turned over the "Cheers" series run.

As much as I love "Kate & Allie", Shelley Long was very good during the first season of "Cheers", and deserved all the accolades awarded her.

Wow, I actually had no idea that either actress had won an Emmy for Kate and Allie, or even been nominated!

I knew there was a good reason I watched the show all those years, hee hee :D

Were St. James & Curtin ever nominated after 1985 for Kate & Allie? Also, is there any way I can get Emmy nominee info somewhere one the web? I have a book that lists that kind of stuff, but only the winners. I would really like to see that, and I'm sure there has to be a record of that somewhere....Thanks

Also, I really love this show!! I have recently started taping it on Oxygen (yes I have to set the VCR timer - I don't get up before the sun does:D ) and I originally planned to watch the episodes once and reuse the tape, but I can't bring myself to do that! The episodes are so great & funny that I have to keep the tapes! Anyway, I won't ramble anymore...

Yes, Kate and Allie is definitely a keeper! Thanks to Oxygen for playing it, and if they would air the end wrap-up as weel it would be perfect.
As for Emmy nominees - www.emmys.org has a searchable database for information from previous years.
(www.webcompass.net is an internet research service that gives great relevant search results.)

But they don't make many classic sitcoms like they did in the 80's. it's great to see them again.

But, does anyone know if St. James or Curtin were ever nominated for Kate & Allie again? Oxygen is currently showing the last season (1988-89) and i've noticed some excellent performances by the actresses. Particulary the one where Kate has to substitute for Allie's cooking class and "covers" the chicken with olive oil by completely submerging it in a pan of oil - I laughed my butt off at that scene! And the one they ran yesterday where Allie slams down on the potato chip bag and it bursts right in front of Kate  I know those seem like corny scenes, but I haven't laughed this hard at this show until now!

I agree, bb25! The look on Kate's face when Allie popped the chip bag was priceless. There were lots of those great moments during Kate and Allie.

I agree.

Unlike most shows that are running on fumes during their last year, "Kate & Allie" was still vibrant and energetic throughout the entire the run of the show.
