These cities are all the capitals of their respective states. Yet they have been overshadowed by more popular cities in their state that are common settings for TV shows. New York City has hundreds of shows set there. I don't recall any set in Albany, it is even outdone by small town Peekskill with The Facts of Life. Numerous cities in California the most common being Los Angeles, but also San Francisco, Santa Barbara, San Jose, and Beverly Hills. Sacramento does have The Mentalist set there, but not much else. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Scranton are settings for Pennsylvania shows. But no Harrisburg that I know of. Chicago would be in the top three of most common show settings, Springfield lives in its shadow with possibly no entries. Detroit overshadows Lansing like Chicago does Springfield. Texas has Dallas, Reba set in Houston, and Young Sheldon in a fictional small town. Nothing again in Austin that I know of. Miami and even Cocoa Beach (I Dream of Jeannie) are more popular settings than Tallahassee. Seattle is a lot more high profile than Olympia with Frasier, Grey's Anatomy, and Sleepless in Seattle. Bucking the trend of other states, Massachusetts' most popular setting is also its capital Boston. My state of Indiana has One Day at a Time and short-lived crime drama Close to Home in Indianapolis, but the other major sitcom from here The Middle is in a fictional small town. Eerie, Indiana and Parks and Recreation are also Hoosier shows set in fictional small towns. Ohio is mixed with Family Ties and Hope and Faith in or near Columbus. Elsewhere they have WKRP in Cincinnati, 3rd Rock from the Sun in a fictional small town, and Hot in Cleveland and The Drew Carey Show in Cleveland.

Mary Tyler Moore Show was situated in Minneapolis, but I doubt any show's town was Saint Paul, capital of Minnesota.

Fictional Orson, Indiana was the hometown of The Middle.

Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley (originally) were set in Milwaukee, but no show that I know of is situated in Madison, Wisconsin.

Coach was also set in Minnesota, around an hour away from the twin cities.
