I know that I'm getting ahead of myself since it (https://books.google.com/books?id=UHdUAAAAIBAJ&pg=PA28&dq=%22Three%27s+Company%22+ABC&article_id=2541,9185933&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjkn7GzvrWIAxXuLtAFHVvGMAAQ6AF6BAgNEAI#v=onepage&q=%22Three's%20Company%22%20ABC&f=false) actually originally aired (https://books.google.com/books?id=bdYeAAAAIBAJ&pg=PA40&dq=%22Three%27s+Company%22+ABC&article_id=1453,2602409&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjkn7GzvrWIAxXuLtAFHVvGMAAQ6AF6BAgHEAI#v=onepage&q=%22Three's%20Company%22%20ABC&f=false) on ABC (https://books.google.com/books?id=UopGAAAAIBAJ&pg=PA10&dq=%22Three%27s+Company%22+ABC&article_id=6678,2080995&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi-57rbwLWIAxVWJUQIHenrLMMQ6AF6BAgHEAI#v=onepage&q=%22Three's%20Company%22%20ABC&f=false) on September 18, 1984 (http://www.tvtango.com/listings/1984/09/18). I was 16 in 1984, man do I fell old. Interesting I was knew, of course I watch the last episode,
aired in Sept of 84. New to me is the possible airing of part 2 in March or May. To me technically
there was a ninth season of Threes Company. Be it one episode it technically aired the next season in Sept. Obviously with the continuation as a new show the following week on Sept 25. Just my opinion.

I remember the exact night this aired, my whole family gathered in the living room to watch it and record onto VHS, I was 8 years old and didn't understand when a TV show airs it's final episodes maybe because I could simply watch TC in syndicated reruns.

The goofiest thing was that weeks TV Guide had a two page spread announcing the series finale and had all the cast in group shot with Janet's head superimposed onto a wedding gown and of course she didn't wear a wedding dress in the actual episode.

We did not notice watching in real time but looking back there was a major clue in season 7 that a spin off was coming. When Jack gets the Bistro lays the ground for Three's A Crowd. When the Bistro appears the Regal Beagle slowly vanishes. While Jack has a new apartment in the spin off, the Bistro is exactly the same where Threes Company ended.

Joyce DeWitt Looks Back on ‘Three’s Company’ 40 Years After Finale (Exclusive) (https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/joyce-dewitt-looks-back-threes-company-40-years-after-finale/)

By Ryan Hudgins September 18, 2024

Come on knock on our door! Joyce DeWitt (a.k.a. Janet) is taking a trip down memory lane to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Three’s Company finale.

“The most dear, precious, tender — and utterly unexpected — experiences that have come from working in Three’s Company are the many, many adults who have told me that Three’s Company was a safe haven they could count on during their teen years — for some, the only safe haven,” DeWitt, 75, exclusively told Us Weekly while reflecting on the Wednesday, September 18, milestone.

DeWitt noted that she’s enjoyed “countless letters and spontaneous conversations” with fans, who she think found “comfort” in watching the sitcom. Three’s Company, which ran for eight seasons from 1976 to 1984 — and lived on for decades later in syndication — followed the hijinks of Jack Tripper (John Ritter) after he moved into an apartment with Janet Wood (DeWitt) and Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers). The beloved, lighthearted series made the most of all three stars’ comedic gifts— so many pratfalls and misunderstandings! — and undeniable, warm chemistry with one another playing platonic roomies.

“It was a ‘time out’ from the oppressive, challenging, difficult circumstances they were navigating in their young lives,” DeWitt recalled. “And, oh by the way, they say the characters also did stupid, crazy stuff that made them laugh. But it was the love, trust and support of the characters, one to the other, that made them lifelong fans.”

While reflecting on the show’s legacy, DeWitt recalled one fan interaction where a woman gushed that Three’s Company “was a family.”

“That as an actor you could be part of such an impact or presence in a young person’s life when all you were doing was trying to make people laugh, that feedback is a blessing unimaginable!” DeWitt said.

DeWitt called Somers “absolutely wonderful” in her role, while also gushing over Ritter. (Somers died in October 2023 at age 76, while Ritter died in September 2003 at age 54.)

“I think I would not be chastised by my friends and fellow cast members in speaking for all of us in saying that working with John was a gift,” she said. “An adventure and a gift, a true gift.”

As for where her character, Janet, would be today, DeWitt admitted that she sees a different future than what the producers and writers intended.

“I was a bit offended when it was time to retire the show that they chose to ‘marry her off’ as the path forward for that character,” DeWitt confessed. “I would have sent her to law school or medical school or to the Peace Corps.”

Instead, DeWitt thinks her character would be helping Phillip Dawson (David Ruprecht) in his art business during the day while attending law school at night. DeWitt added that she believes Janet “now works for the ACLU — her intention and passion being to help give voice to those who don’t have one, or at least to assist them in finding their own voice.”

While the show has been off the air since 1984, DeWitt noted that fans of Three’s Company can find the series from that era later this year on the streaming channel 80s Sitcom Flashback. A new 40th Anniversary DVD set includes all episodes of the eight seasons of Three’s Company.

I find it kind of interesting that Joyce appears to believe that Janet would've still been together with Phillip. I do wonder if Joyce was ever in the camp that believes that Janet should've wound up with Jack to close out Three's Company instead of the direction that they ultimately went with. I do agree that just marrying Janet off just never felt or sat completely right with me. Especially with how we barely got to know Phillip (he was literally introduced two episodes prior to the finale) to be truly invested in his relationship with Janet.

I can understand completely why people weren't totally satisfied with the ending (https://www.reddit.com/r/80s/comments/1fkkyf8/yesterday_was_the_40th_anniversary_of_the_threes/). It was deemed as being the "end" (https://www.reddit.com/r/threescompany/comments/1dglhrk/your_thoughts_on_the_series_finale/) but we never got a full sense of closure, at least for Jack. The fact that Three's Company literally ends with Mr. Bradford barging into Jack's new bedroom to inform him that he's his new landlord kind of rubs me the wrong way. It felt more like an unresolved cliffhanger ending (at least, if you've never watched Three's a Crowd), cruel twist ending, or a shaggy dog joke if that makes sense. I would've preferred the episode to end with Jack, Janet, and Terri leaving the apartment one last time. And whatever transpires next for Jack could be settled on Three's a Crowd.

Apparently, the series finale for Three's Company, "Friends and Lovers", was originally supposed to air on May 22, 1984.

I just don't understand why ABC just couldn't have had that "Friends and Lovers" finale air on May 22 of 1984 (only two weeks after Happy Days's official series finale), and then repeated it on September 18. Another thing that makes Three's Company's ending (and the whole show in general) look fxxked up.

That one photo "For Brad" where Joyce has long hair is nice. I don't believe I've ever seen her with long hair. I assume this was after 3's went off the air?

Based on the first image, it appears that the finale ("Friends and Lovers") was first taped on February 5, 1984. It appears that the announcement (https://books.google.com/books?id=EalOAAAAIBAJ&pg=PA2&dq=%22Three%27s+Company%22+%22Three%27s+a+Crowd%22&article_id=6895,3094233&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjIhOir1PuJAxXv_8kDHfs_BnEQ6AF6BAgHEAI) that Three's Company (https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/threes-company-1977-to-1984.993241/) would be coming to an end following the conclusion of the 1983-84 TV season and John Ritter would then go on to Three's a Crowd was first made back in December 1983.

At that moment I dont think she was going to rain on the party and be negative while the show was filming its last episode. Its not what she says today. I have heard her say on reunions that she was happy the show was cancelled and did not care John was having a spin off. Joyce had a right to be upset that ABC kept the spin off a secret for as long as they did.

I think it was bittersweet for Priscilla back then. I think she has love for the show nowadays , going by some of her interviews I've seen from her event appearances.

I get why Priscilla's mentality about the show ending would or may have been different than Joyce's. Priscilla didn't come into Three's Company until it was already about six years on the air. So it isn't like she had as big of an attachment to the show as Joyce did, who along with John, was there from the very beginning.

I never got the impression that Priscilla was like Susan Dey with The Partridge Family or Tina Louise with Gilligan's Island in what, she seemingly saw Three's Company as an embarrassment and totally beneath her as an actress. Maybe Priscilla had to realize, that she may never get as "good" or high profile of a gig as Three's Company again, so she might as well "embrace it".

I don't understand why Priscilla Barnes was so upset by Three's Company ending when she later stated that her time on the show was the worst three years of her life.

By the time that Priscilla was brought on - everyone was extremely guarded. There was still lingering tension in place amongst the cast members over the brouhaha with Suzanne Somers. Plus, Priscilla said she would get severely criticized by producers for even being "too blonde". So the environment was quite toxic.

I'm trying to think or find other occurrences where a TV show's series finale episode was aired as essentially, a "one off" special (https://www.google.com/search?q=What+television+series+finales+were+aired+by+their+respective+networks+as+a+one-off+special%3F&sca_esv=5b71cfa89013eb9f&sxsrf=AE3TifNrsLCJC5Km-ZgSgg3-Mej1GwNgnQ%3A1757914903945&udm=50&fbs=AIIjpHxU7SXXniUZfeShr2fp4giZrjP_Cx0LI1Ytb_FGcOviEiaSXTsdMUiuBeEuSNqG6MGxAgmTPrUk32Qw7HMCrZRR7g-RRFFbn0y_7nZVO61ZFxzc_5MXkaRlPgxU0-Wniyt7RV4l2QeyYrFlqP7M4tSV6JXySg7QxEFS07hCETjiEyKPi0Z5PzJFVvKo7GfDI4n1OMg2IatPZ6sjfEegRQ3pzezuEQ&aep=1&ntc=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiAppSrh9qPAxVERTABHf9qHiMQ2J8OegQIEBAE&biw=1600&bih=773&dpr=1&mtid=PKfHaNPaNIaZwbkPk6-hiAw&mstk=AUtExfDAqnU_G76IrI2EIHhTHiEGypEvKciTXMrMqzC2bPAbwwWu3jQUJMR8xg-XDGqHSAmyilvVRQyKOUIPqmuM0t9IoodMq_Sx8j78mW92ChaevjFTq0va2jHlkXX2aXyqc3aEscc-HaE9IOkZ4hjsKMvu0y_g0ZidpTULbVEdt8nBD5L0EFGjAHZtEVIp7TQHwTvTLz4m4eObR11BogprjmWsfuOA6s8kKjU6F78ZQPOeZKqs0Oca6g0S1A7wRk-7E9d4aD_HBlFXVVQzVdVO5z20MNm6v7WyYC-XboD8PEKuDDazvhEaqnnfC1wGWjWeInYiccSc40wapcYvUcFpK0-EL67yBVQC9uhyJSWobU6LqXBNvMRiQ0q0PwkDDYw85mWbWolbgfl28tIPWpuZqMDs6WVpWf77R2UMzfzzdpMvCr_iphMesC49-0jZSQHWipXhSAUYwsKhMNu6kzdRezD_MqdywIga&csuir=1) of sorts besides Three's Company (https://www.facebook.com/groups/classic.television.shows.group/posts/1285074058807254/). I wonder if the series finale of Three's Company was ever treated by either the network or the press as major event or milestone at the time. I've been searching around YouTube to see if anything mentioning the fact that it was the series finale was brought up but I haven't found anything thus far, beyond this:
L-3k1yYhtuM

ALL NEW! Here is the halftime break of the final episode under the Three's Company title. First, it's plugs for 7-Up, a trailer for All of ME, promos for People Do the Craziest Things, Who's the Boss and Glitter., with the Three's Company Billboard in between.

I get the feeling that we as viewers, were never going to be given enough time to reflect because of the unusual scheduling that ABC gave to the finale, September 18, 1984 (https://abc-broadcast-archive.fandom.com/wiki/September_18,_1984). That was literally a week before the series premiere of the spin-off, Three's a Crowd. So, Three's a Crowd just felt like a revamped and paired down version of Three's Company with only John Ritter sticking around instead of a decisive "ending". Basically, Three's Company is still going to be around, it's just that you aren't going to be seeing Jack hanging out with Janet, Terri, Larry, and Mr. Furley anymore.
