View Full Version : The last TV show theme song that was also a hit record
24/7 reruns 10-31-2023, 02:17 PM Any guesses on what TV shows theme song also was a hit song. I remember hearing Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Cheers theme songs on the radio growing up. Yet Friends, Dawson's Creek, and Gilmore Girl's had theme songs high up the music charts.
Yet I'm not sure what TV theme song was the last to be a hit song.
sm95fan 10-31-2023, 02:46 PM Not really a theme but a song featured in a TV show was Running Up That Hill from “Stranger Things.” #3 on Billboard Hot 100 on 7/30/ 2022

Was it actually the theme song to Stranger Things or just a featured song?
sm95fan 10-31-2023, 03:11 PM I think the actual last hit theme song was Heights: How Do You Talk To An Angel
#1 Billboard Hot 100 11/92
sm95fan 10-31-2023, 03:14 PM It also depends on your definition of a hit. I think the last top 40 was I'll Be There For You from Friends #17 in 1995.
There was Searchin' My Soul from Ally McBeal in 1998 that charted top 25 A/C but not on the Hot 100. Today's the Day from PiNK was the later theme of Ellen and reached #117 in 2015.
24/7 reruns 10-31-2023, 05:06 PM I was thinking of any song that charted on a music top (what ever type music category it would fit in). Also my thought was the song started as a TV theme song and then became a hit. With Kate Bush's song " Running Up That Hill " it was a charted hit long before "Stranger Things " was even a thought.

That would eliminate your examples of Gilmore and Dawson then as well as those were hits long before they were used in the shows. I have no idea what a 'music top' is...
stevea 10-31-2023, 06:17 PM "I'll Be There for You" by the Rembrandts, I think it was for "Friends."
Probably "Love and Marriage" by Frank Sinatra was a hit many years ago, used for "Married with Children."
I think there was a Mike Post instrumental that charted, which might have been the theme for "The Rockford Files." Help needed for that one.
I think Ob La De, Ob La Da by the Beatles was the "Life Goes On" theme, and some hit song was used on the network airings of "Grace Under Fire."

Thanks for that info. Having never watched either show so I did know when they started compared to the time the songs were released.
icecream 10-31-2023, 09:19 PM It was probably The Big Bang Theory.

Was that song played on the radio? I don't recall that happening.

No, I don't think it was.

stevea 11-01-2023, 10:57 PM If I'd have responded properly to this thread, my guess would be the last/latest one would be the Friends theme by the Rembrandts, or possibly Grace Under Fire.
