Facts about New Madrid Seismic Zone

While not as well known for earthquakes as California or Alaska, the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), located in southeastern Missouri, northeastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, western Kentucky and southern Illinois, is the most active seismic area in the United States, east of the Rocky Mountains. The area includes major cities such as Memphis, Tennessee, St. Louis, Missouri, Little Rock, Arkansas and Evansville, Indiana. Every year hundreds of small earthquakes occur in the NMSZ, however, most are too small to be felt by humans and can only be detected by sensitive instruments.

History
The NMSZ is famous for a series of three major earthquakes (believed to have been magnitude 7.0 or larger) which occurred in the two month period between Dec. 16, 1811, and Feb. 7, 1812. In addition, hundreds of moderate earthquakes (magnitude 5.0-6.5) and thousands of smaller (magnitude 5.0- 4.0) earthquakes occurred in between the larger earthquakes and continued shaking the area for several months. These earthquakes were felt and recorded in personal journals as far away as Louisville, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio.

OMG !! I did !! :eek:The 4.4 felt way stronger than the 5.3 because it was closer I guess . But I was scared after the Bakersfield one because my Son lives up there and I texted and called and he didn't get back to me right away !

Earthquakes are the only weather type thing with no warning. Blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes all come with pre event warnings.

My aunt and uncle's families in northern Greece experienced a devastating earthquake back in 1981. Lots of rebuilding since then, with reinforced concrete. Thankfully there's been nothing comparable to that event in recent decades.

It is good that you admit that the earth is moving "worldwide!"
The question is if the earth is "moving more" than it has in the past?

Matthew 24:7 and Mark 13:8
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom,
and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes:
These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.

Foggy, NO ONE can answer if Earth is moving MORE....and so what if it is or isn't.... Stay on it and enjoy the ride as best we can.

What I can answer with sureness, I think, is I'm alive and the rest who knows...A friend on another group posted a Lovely but kinda long: Morning Sunrise Prayer. He said he put it on his bathroom mirror to say it daily...... I may post it here soon...

Most members thank him and are Happy To Be Alive in spite of all that is NUTS in the world.

People who are happy now and think the world is so good (Like a friend of mine) are brainwashed and being controlled........

Thats not how I wanna live!!!!!!!

Earthquakes are not a weather type thing. They are a geology/seismology type thing.

Yes, Earthquakes having nothing to do with the weather. They are caused by the shift in tectonic plates.

I know what you mean. People think that we have a lot of tornadoes in Michigan. If so I have never seen one. The ones that we do have are usually minor and few and far between.

We had an F5 tornado just 30 miles north of us in 1953. I was too young to remember but after that my dad built a storm shelter.

We had a very minor earthquake in the mid- 80s. I didn't feel it but a lot of people did including my husband who was in bed and felt it move.

For some reason Lower Western Michigan gets a lot of severe storms, snowstorms included. Maybe Lake Michigan has a lot to do with it? Anyway, I am situated in mid-Michigan(Genesee County) and we get a lot of storm alerts but they mostly miss us.

That is good to know!

Usually that is what we would get "storm alerts: Severe Storm Warning or Tornado Watches," but this year we have had 4 tornado's in our county.
Not to close to us, but close enough.

Where do you live?

50 miles East of Columbus, Ohio. A small city called Zanesville, Ohio --
home of the "Famous Y Bridge" :)

About 328 miles southeast (Approximately 4hrs 35 mins driving) mainly down US23 to I-70.
Genesee County isn't that where Flint, Mich. is?
