Earlier this month, the nominees were announced for this year’s edition of the MTV Video Music Awards (or VMAs), and two categories immediately stood out to me for all the wrong reasons. The Best Rock and Best Alternative categories (especially rock) are a joke, and the nominations are a damning sign of how woefully out of touch MTV is with that part of the music world. Worst part is, it’s been that way for a long time now.

Those nominated artists? Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Green Day, Kings of Leon, Lenny Kravitz and U2 for Best Rock. Benson Boone, Bleachers, Hozier, Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park, and Teddy Swims for Best Alternative.

Just by looking at some of the names of the rock category nominees in recent years, it’s not only unsurprising that none of those songs are nominated for the evening’s biggest categories, but it’s painfully obvious that the channel’s concept of “rock” and “alternative” music needs a serious, HARD reset.

When MTV stopped playing music videos it meant time for MTV to begin a new image. But when MTV launched with it's first music video this was the new way of learning about music. So when artists like Cyndi Lauper Madonna Michael Jackson and Prince made their marks MTV was usually the first channel to broadcast new videos of their new singles and it made them hit the jackpot. And when rock bands such as Joan Jett and The Blackhearts Kiss and Poison and Foreigner had new videos MTV started becoming more popular with the rock fans. But I think when the 90's began MTV began focusing less on music videos and developed original programming such as the game show Singled Out and though they already had tried their hand at game shows with Remote Control they repeated it with Lip Service which launched the career of comedian Jay Mohr but it was actually The Real World that began their new mature image and soon with shows for a mature adult audience such as Jersey Shore Teen Mom and other reality shows MTV knew it meant bye bye to the music video format and focusing on other things. But when Total Request Live or TRL came in the picture many artists such as Britney Spears and NSync were getting music videos played. But once TRL ended this was the end of music videos for MTV

When they stopped playing MUSIC they should have changed thier name!!

They are a disgrace to TV now!!

MTV CLASSIC is the only GOOD one left and who knows how long they will last!!!

MTV abandoned music videos because it’s not financially tenable for a major cable network to play music videos, especially now that anyone can pull up any music video they want on demand on YouTube.

Linear television itself is dying, as well, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see legacy cable networks, including MTV, shut down their linear channels in the next decade. I’m sure the brand would live on in some form, though.

Luckily I had a Betamax and recorded everything I wanted.

I havent ever seen a beta recording...

There aren't many Beta recorders around anymore. I have a Betamax gathering dust and it weighs a ton.

Whats the longest Beta tape you have even seen or heard of Stevie?

I think it's the L-750 which was an hour and a half. I thought there was a slower speed option, but i'll have to look over some old tapes in the basement to see. (Update: I just checked Wikipedia and the B-II speed increased recording time to 2 hours on the L-500 cassette. They said that reduced quality, but the same happened with VHS.)

The length is a real minus, of course, but I never cared about that. I used to do editing from one player to another, which routinely worked fine on a Beta machine. But for VHS, you had to buy an expensive four head machine to do the same thing.

Editing is SO much easier with a DVD recorder. It's a shame those have now gone by the wayside, just like VCRs have.

The secondary market for DVD recorders is very active. I find them at Goodwill quite often, usually for $20 or less. I recently picked up a real nice Toshiba with remote for $10. I just finished testing it a few days ago and it works great. I expect to flip it for $125 - $150.
