When it was announced that Jeffrey Katzenberg would be launching a new animation company after being with Disney many people were anxious to see what this new animation company would be like and would it be competition for Warner Bros Animation and Disney and so with the help of David Geffen and Steven Spelberg Dreamworks was born. In 1998 they created their first computer movie with PDI which was Antz and when Antz opened in theaters Thanksgiving 1998 it had to share competition with another movie about insects which was Disney's A Bug's Life and when those movies were huge during the 1998 holiday season this was the start of Dreamworks rivalry with Disney. But while A Bug's Life was geared to kids and adults Antz was mostly for adults even though few merchandise of Antz was sold to kids. But still Dreamworks hung on even with the possiblity of Antz failing in theaters. But in 1999 once The Prince Of Egypt debuted in theaters The Prince Of Egypt was the movie that made Dreamworks successful and with it's interesting storyline and the catchy song When You Believe Dreamworks was on top with The Prince Of Egypt and they even created a sequel called Joseph King Of Dreams in 2000. But like Disney Dreamworks knew that animated movies were ways to sell movie merchandise and it would take a movie that would become a pop culture hit. That movie was Shrek and from the time it was announced Dreamworks had high hopes for Shrek and the critics were right because not only was Shrek a hit it spawned sequels a Broadway musical and Shrek was even a balloon in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. And because of Shrek's success they repeated it with How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda. But for me the downfall of Dreamworks was when they created movies like Over The Hedge Sinbad And The Legend Of The Seven Seas and why they created Flushed Away with the voices of Kate Winslet and Hugh Jackman? But the next film that brought them back to form was Madagascar and like Shrek it sprawned sequels too and a cartoon series. And it was the beginning of Dreamworks TV cartoon shows as we saw shows based on Madagascar How To Train Your Dragon Spirit Stallion Of The Cimarron and Monsters Vs Aliens. And speaking of Spirit Stallion Of The Cimarron I have no idea how Dreamworks created this film but it is one of Dreamworks best movies. But I think what really hurt Dreamworks was when they created The Bad Guys and it had NO merchandise at all unlike Trolls which is the franchise that really has gotten big for Dreamworks and you can see why Trolls has a big following because Dreamworks thinks it will be the new Shrek. But I think in the future Dreamworks will develop an animation channel for cable TV with cartoons and team up with Paramount+ to add more cartoons. What will the future hold for Dreamworks? Only time will tell
