I don't think that they ever said who the new chief of police was. And didn't it too you seem like Officer Simpson's subsequent appearances seemed to be for no reason other than “just because”? He was dropped after the move to New York.

I dont think they ever mentioned it. I do remember the episode when the police force is sick and Nell and her friend have to fill in as police officers. The show was really running thin at that point. Gimmie A Break 's first season was the best IMHO and every season after just got worse. When the Chief died the show sort of died too IMHO. I never liked that brat Joey.
