Peter Graves (1926-2010) grew up in Minnesota. He served in the Army Air Forces in World War II and went to the University of Minnesota on the GI Bill. Graves began acting at the start of the 1950s; his first major film role was in Fort Defiance, a Western.
Although he wasn’t a major star, Graves was a workhorse during the 1950s. He had major roles in a long list of films, ranging from classics like Stalag 17 and The Night of the Hunter, to sci-fi films about alien invaders, like Killers from Space and It Conquered the World. In 1955, Graves began a five year run as the star of the NBC Western series Fury.
In the early 1960s, Graves’s career seemed to stall, but he bounced back in 1967, when he joined the cast of Mission: Impossible as Jim Phelps, one of his two best-known roles. His other most famous role came in 1980, as Captain Clarence Oveur in Airplane!

During the 1980s, Graves returned to the role of Jim Phelps for a Mission: Impossible revival which lasted two seasons. He also was part of the enormous ensemble casts of the ABC miniseries adaptations of Herman Wouk’s The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. More recent audiences might remember his appearances on 7th Heaven as Eric Camden’s father, “the Colonel.”
