View Full Version : The name of the supermarket you use
I’m looking for who you use right now, but feel free to reminisce about the past. I currently use Stop & Shop.
The dream has always been the piggly wiggly, but I don’t think I’ll ever achieve that dream :(

1960'sTVfan 07-20-2024, 05:45 PM I currently shop for groceries at a store named Jay C.
Years back when I used to summer vacation with family members in northeast Wisconsin, the nearest town had a Piggly Wiggly store and I shopped there several times over the years.
Other supermarket stores that I fondly remember are:
A & P
IGA
National

It's just a grocery store like all the others but I agree the name is cool. If I remember correctly, their advertising slogan is "Shop the pig!"

The name was a gamble but it works. There’s no definitive explanation as to where it came from
>>>The origin of the name Piggly Wiggly is a mystery, as the founder, Clarence Saunders, was reluctant to explain it. When asked why he chose the name, Saunders would sometimes say, "So people will ask that very question". <<<

I fondly remember Acme , A & P , Pantry Pride and Penn Fruit from my Philly days. Of all of them I think Acme is the only one still in business.

Oh, this isn't about a game show.
I've been to Piggly Wiggly in the past, but their closest store is over 20 miles away. They aren't exactly down the street like one of their slogans. It's not really worth the extra effort.
Kroger, Publix and Winn-Dixie are our closest stores. They made a film called Because of Winn-Dixie. We had Schnucks (not to be confused with Canucks) in St. Louis and Jewel-Osco in Chicago.

Some supermarkets of the past are Pathmark= Miss their 50 cent Snapple Deals
Grand Union= They used to to this deal where a parent had the hand in keys and the child got a little shopping cart to go around the store with.
FoodTown= Used to be part of a shopping center, where the space is had been home to an Office Depot, currently a gym.

I wonder if a man named Wile E. Coyote shops there…
Those of you who watched the Road Runner cartoons will get the joke.

I used to go to Stop and Shop when I was in Brooklyn. Which one do you go to? I recently read that they're closing a lot of stores in the NY area.
Frank Gannucci 07-24-2024, 08:38 PM Now that I’m living in Southwest Florida, I shop at Publix and Super Target (the latter is because I work there).
When I lived in Northern NJ me and members of my family, it was Stop & Shop, Grand Union, Foodtown & especially A&P.

The one at Bay Terrace Shopping Center. Used to be a Waldbaums, and a long long time ago used to be a bowling alley.

My family currently uses Aldi and Kroger, but I have
memories of Schnuck's and Dierberg's, 2 regional chains
in the St. Louis area.
Zoneboy 07-25-2024, 09:24 PM I have several:
Aldi
Food Lion
Harris-Teeter
IGA
Ingles
Lidl
Lowes Foods
Piggly Wiggly
Publix
Walmart
Where I shop each week depends on the sales.

Because all you post about is politics and health, which no one else wants. And don't start
with "I'm nearly 86 years old and no one on here respects me!" We don't want to hear that
again! Respect is not just given, it is earned! It doesn't matter whether you are actually 86
years old or 186, you act like you are 5 or 10! Insulting someone who doesn't agree with you
is not being mature.
biffbronson 07-26-2024, 03:22 AM Kroger
and occasionally Aldi, or Martin's (regional)
My niece shops Trader Joe's, which is fairly new to my area.
Gibson Girl 07-26-2024, 10:50 AM Walmart
Hannaford or Price Chopper occasionally.
Hawkee 07-28-2024, 03:57 AM When my family went grocery shopping we used to shop at Albertson's and Mom loved Albertson's for their sales and whenever we would go to Target I used to LOVE it when we would go to Albertson's because it also would mean a trip to Ross Dress For Less because the Albertson's was in the same shopping center as Target and Ross Dress For Less and my family would go to Albertson's every week to shop because they had great sales and deals. When I lived in my old house we actually had a Food 4 Less in our neighborhood within walking distance and my mom and I would sometimes go there to buy food and weekend snacks and it was awesome because Food 4 Less had an amazing candy selection full of candies that were hard to find and Mom would buy Big Hunk bars there

Yes, I remember all those names from growing up in the Philly area (South Jersey). We mostly shopped at Acme, or a local store, Stewart's. When I was real small and we lived in the Philly suburbs, I remember my dad worked at Penn Fruit. There was also a chain, Shop Rite.
There were many department stores--Gimbel's, Wanamaker's, Strawbridge's (Strawbridge & Clothier), Korvette's (lower end), Kresge's (future K-Mart)...
Now, in the Indy area, mostly Meijer, a midwest chain headquartered in Michigan.
stevea 07-28-2024, 08:09 AM oh my how this useless stuff continues on this chit chat, and anything one can really learn the threads are Closed..................
Yes, it's always better to talk about freaks and weirdos on Nouri's radio show. Learned a lot from that.
biffbronson 07-29-2024, 08:18 AM Now, in the Indy area, mostly Meijer, a midwest chain headquartered in Michigan.
Since Kroger is based in Cincinnati, in close proximity to Indy, I would think they'd have a big presence there (if not commanding)? I remember visiting an Indy area Kroger store in 2007 or so.
Hawkee 08-03-2024, 05:26 AM Do you remember a supermarket chain named Save A Lot? Save A Lot was gonna be big as Albertsons but they never caught on to compete with Albertson's and I think Save A Lot no longer exists today. My grandfather was also a fan of Smart And Final and I don't know how he discovered Smart And Final but he started my parents shopping there and Smart And Final is so cool. I believe there that a grocery store chain named Lowes exists and it's based in Texas and they are kind of like Vons but my aunt shopped there too

There is still a Save-A-Lot near where I live. I don't go there anymore for 2 reasons: their prices are not as competitive as they used to be, and the store manager is mean & nasty.
They had another location a couple of miles away that they closed just a few years ago. Also about 10 years ago they opened a 3rd location but it didn't last.
Hawkee 08-04-2024, 05:23 AM Do you remember Skaggs Alpha Beta? My mom was a giant fan of that store when I was a baby and Skaggs Alpha Beta sold everything you could name in addition to groceries and they were based in Texas and they were the top grocery store chain in Texas. My grandfather used to shop IGA and when he would grocery shop there it was like Cheers because every single cashier knew him and they would chat with my grandfather while ringing up his groceries. But we used to have Ralph's and sometimes when we would shop every time on the way home my parents and I would stop at Ralph's and grab ourselves a few groceries and Ralph's was so cool because they actually had a reading area where I would read Harry Potter books and sometimes comics like Buffy The Vampire Slayer comics and Angel comics as well
and the store manager is mean & nasty.
I don’t think I’ve ever frequented a chain type store and knew who the store manager was. (So called “mom and pop” type stores are a different story of course).
biffbronson 08-05-2024, 08:54 AM Regarding that, I had an incident where grapes (produce) I was purchasing did not ring up at the advertised price. This is a fairly small supermarket, and the guy who was called to fix the problem was the Manager. Anyway, he treated me as if I were trying to put something over on them. IIRC I even had a copy of their current printed ad as proof.
