The obligatory round of negotiating-via-press concluded — “game show veteran revealed that he would likely not renew his contract,” “probably won’t return for another round after his contract expires in 2016,” etc. — Sony Pictures Television this morning announced it had signed Alex Trebek to a new contract through the 2017-18 TV season.

Likewise, Sony’s "Wheel of Fortune" duo Pat Sajak and Vanna White have signed through ’17-18, both shows’ EP Harry Friedman announced.

“The enduring success of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! serves as a testament to the talents of these remarkable hosts,” said Friedman.

"Wheel of Fortune", averages 11.4 million viewers daily in its current 32nd season.

"Jeopardy!", in its 31st season on the air, clocks 10.7 million viewers.

Both shows are produced by Sony Pictures TV and distributed domestically by CBS Television Distribution, and internationally by CBS Television International.

I am surprised that Jeopardy doesn't pull in more viewers. I guess figuring out phases is easier than coming up with an answer to a question. I prefer Jeopardy.

So Alex Trebek isn't retiring then?

I remember hearing he would call it quits in 2016.

I'm happy that Jeopardy will be around a bit longer, Wheel Of Fortune not so much. I haven't watched it in years because I think it's gotten quite boring and ridiculous (as in a lot of the puzzle "categories"). Eyeroll.

Alex Trebek explains what bothers him on Jeopardy!, says media coverage of his retirement comments were overblown (https://www.vulture.com/2018/11/alex-trebek-jeopardy-in-conversation.html)

"I don’t understand the publicity around it," Trebek tells Vulture in a wide-ranging interview, referring to his chat last summer with Harvey Levin on his Fox News show about potentially retiring in 2020 (http://www.tmz.com/2018/07/30/alex-trebek-jeopardy-replacement-alex-faust-kings-hockey/). "The same thing happened when I shaved my mustache off in 2001. It got so much play. Folks, get a life. There are more important things." Trebek also discussed what he doesn't like contestants to do. "What bothers me is when contestants jump all over the board even after the Daily Doubles have been dealt with," he says. "Why are they doing that? They’re doing themselves a disservice. When the show’s writers construct categories they do it so that there’s a flow in terms of difficulty, and if you jump to the bottom of the category you may get a clue that would be easier to understand if you’d begun at the top of the category and saw how the clues worked. I like there to be order on the show, but as the impartial host I accept disorder." ALSO: Why is Trebek's house entirely decorated in beige?
