View Full Version : NBC Next year
Madness 10-04-2002, 04:16 PM What do you all think NBC Thursday night will look like next year when(hopefully it does happen) Friends leaves the picture? Who do you think will fill the 8pm position? I see Frasier coming back to Thursday nights to give it a boost and maybe Just Shoot Me and Scrubs anchoring Tuesday nights.

I don't think they'll pull Frasier away from Tuesday. Frasier fought hard to establish itself there after being bounced from Thursday, so I don't think they'll move. If Scrubs keeps up with their ratings and rep, maybe they might move to 8...
As for Just Shoot Me, I wouldn't let them anchor a toy boat in my bathtub.
They're done after this season.

NBC is making a new show called "Coupling" which is pretty much a copy-off Friends. I don't know if it will be in the 8 PM slot, though. Friends might have a 10th Season, but that is highly unlikely.
Brian Damage 10-04-2002, 05:06 PM If NBC ponies up the money, I can almost guarantee a 10th season. Just Shoot Me isn't just the name of the sitcom, the show is also begging for it.
Madness 10-04-2002, 05:15 PM Ouch...I'm gonna guess there's not too many Just Shoot Me fans here!hehe
Brian Damage 10-04-2002, 05:39 PM I actually liked Just Shoot Me, but I think it has worn out its welcome.

Oh, I agree. I used to like the show and I watch it in syndication. But ever since I saw that Christmas episode with Ray Liotta as himself, mugging up the scenery (look, Ray Liotta is crazy in real life!), I knew they were grasping.
This year is the end for them.
Central Perk 10-04-2002, 06:47 PM Maybe if there was a Joey Spinoff that could be moved to the Thursday Night 8pm timeslot..or maybe even Will & Grace will move to the 8pm timeslot...they'll think of something...
Sitcomwriter 10-04-2002, 07:45 PM My Prediction:
8:00-Coupling (NEW SERIES! NBC already has plans for it to replace Friends. It'll premiere in March of this year I think)
8:30-Scrubs
9:00-Will and Grace
9:30-New Series (Good Morning Miami moves to Tuesdays replacing the cancelled "Just Shoot Me"!)
10:00-ER (Final Season)

The Joey spin-off is not happening... it would also be very very bad, in my opinion.
dlemond 10-04-2002, 11:35 PM Basically NBC Thursday is screwed without Friends.
Unless they move Fraiser.
Two new shows won't do.
And Scrubs is too new to be an anchor, so all you have left is Will and Grace- which better improve on last years' decline.
NBC is in a heap of trouble and I wouldn't be surprised if they bucked up huge (I mean more than these marginal talents are getting already) and milked Friends for another year.
Besides, the Friends actors' careers outside the series is nothing to bank on (or brag about)- yet 20+ million a year is.

I doubt they'll put Will and Grace on at 8pm. They can't get away with as much as they do if the put them on at 8pm. Plus Will and Grace is the only show so far to do very well against CSI. That was a major reason Just Shoot Me was moved from Thursday to Tuesday. I'm sure NBC will come up with great new shows that will win their timeslots. Everyone thought when Cheers and The Cosby Show left that NBC was going to go through a Thursday night power struggle and then they thought the same thing when Seinfeld left. But then Friends came along and helped out. If NBC gets Coupling a big hit in the UK and a Joey spin-off their ratings could do very well. I think what NBC should do is change mustsee tv to Monday night and destroy CBS's monday line up.
dlemond 10-05-2002, 12:51 AM You have to understand, without a veteran lead-in, there is no way Thursday will work for NBC.
They set themselves up, because Friends did not originate there.
Madness 10-05-2002, 01:07 AM But didn't Friends debut in 1994 Thursdays at 8:30pm?
dlemond 10-05-2002, 01:26 AM Friends did not originate at 8:00 pm.
They moved there in an attempt to establish a stronghold, which they did.
I remember grumble that it may have been a mistake to put them there.
Oh well, no problem with that.
Central Perk 10-05-2002, 09:36 AM NBC will think of something they always have and always will, The thing is that I'm not sure people will want to watch Coupling, if its a lot like Friends people might look at and think been there done that. I think that NBC should have Kauffman/Crane/Bright make a new show about something else and move that to the 8pm timeslot.
Madness 10-05-2002, 10:52 AM Gotcha--I thought you meant it didn't originate on Thursday nights...

Will and Grace Fanatic 10-05-2002, 02:50 PM Well I have seen adds on BBC America about "Coupling" and they say it is a cross between "Friends" and "Sex and the City". So it is like "Friends" with sex. May be good, not sure. But I sure wish we would stop copying British Shows.

If that's the case, this new show might have to be on at 9pm or later.

Yes, that is true but they may tone it down a little since we can't get away with some of the stuff the british shows can get away with.
Sitcomwriter 10-06-2002, 11:55 AM Look at "Absoulutey Faboulous" or whatever it's called! Even with all the drug refrences and use it's still TV-PG!

I think CBS will claim Thursday nights.
By the way, has anyone seen Coupling?
AJ2086 10-07-2002, 11:34 AM I hope that there will be a 10th season, I do not want Friends to end. But if it ends this year NBC has a problem. They do not have any decent show to put at 8 for an anchor. Thursday night has been NBC's night for 10 years plus thanks to Seinfeld, and then Friends replacing Seinfeld. Friends benefited from Seinfeld being there lead in. But the only show after Friends that actualy has good ratings and a strong following is Will & Grace. But this does not compare to Friends. NBCs hold on Thursday has come to an end. As for Coupling, I do not think I will watch. Nothing can replace Friends.
LucyCompanyPhan 10-07-2002, 12:26 PM shows that could replace "Friends"
Frasier-I doubt that they would move Frasier again, only because they usually dont play around with time slots too much. Its too much of a hassle and alot of the people who watch frasier on a tuesday night dont want thursday night
Just Shoot Me-it can barely handle a tuesday night slot
inlaws/hidden hills-no one has meantioned a move for the in-laws yet and i wouldnt doubt its an idea, but i think its way too much like "tuesday" night tv for the move
Friends season 10-of course if there is a season 10 its gonna be at 8
Friends spinoff-if there is a spinoff i almost bet that it would take over the 8 oclock free slot
bright/Kauffman/crane new sitcom- if they did a sitcom, i would bet that NBC would jump at the chance to add it to a thursday night... not to meantion 8 or 8:30 slot
Skrubs-this would probably the most likely show to take over friends slot. Its new, but not too new for an 8 o clock show. it wouldnt do any where near friends and NBC would probably have a hard time getting people to watch Will & Grace after words
Will & Grace- This is probably the best show next to friends that NBC has to offer but it does too well at 9 to even touch.i couldnt imagine it at 8.
Good Morning Miami-This is a good show, its worth being on Thursday Night....its probably worth a better time slot than 9:30.... but could it handle the front line? probably not? NBC is most likely keep this show, but wondering if they will touch its slot. It has 3 ways to go- 1) keeping it on at thursday night but chaning the time 2) moving it to tuesday for a better time slot. 3)doesnt change-- if i were NBC i wouldnt touch this show unless it needs to.
New sitcom-a new sitcom come jump in, but thats a huge huge risk . i mean its differently a tough chance to take at 8 no matter how new and great the show is, its gotta get the eye of the people before it comes close to friends
Drama- i wouldnt line a drama up
OK so there are the moves that NBC could make.... if I were NBC id say the best way to move is.... keep Friends for a 10th and FINALE season... find your new sitcom and place it on at 8:30 on thursday or a tuesday night and watch for your hit.... but maybe thats what NBC has in mind for Good Morning Miami,Skrubs,Hidden Hills or Inlaws.... never know.... all i know is that as of right now... nothing could replace friends.
Will and Grace Fanatic 10-07-2002, 01:42 PM I feel that next season will be CBS's night. They will win the 8pm hour with that Survivor show and they will win the 9pm hour with CSI. But NBC will take over the 10pm hour with ER. I think it will be about a year or two before NBC will be able to take over Thursday night again. And when they do CBS beware.
dlemond 10-07-2002, 01:46 PM For crying out loud people!
First off- Friends has sucked for the last couple years. They practically beg us for their affection, it's like the writers sit around and say to each other, "gee, how can we make this scene more endearing?"
They know they have a built in audience and they write down to us at best, insult us with their slack attitude.
Oh Phoebe, what a card! Oh Chandler, so lovingly cynical! Oh Joey, that loveable dope! Oh Monica, she wants to make it all right! Oh Rachel, you can't keep her down! Oh- and Ross, always a.. umm a .... hmm. Useless tool? That sounds right.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Without a Trace is actually a good show. Er will win the 10pm timeslot but that show is old too. How much longer will that show air? Friends and ER debuted during the same year. I don't think ER has that much time left at all. The difference between NBC and CBS is that CBS has newer shows and most of NBC shows are way past their prime.

wow u kinda got off the subject here. We didnt really ask you for your opinion on friends. we are simply talking about whats gonna happen to NBC next year. We never really cared if you like friends in the first place or whatever. Just cause we are talking about a show doesnt mean you can come here and rub in your opinion about something nothing to do with anything. tell your little story to some other board. not here cos i dont wanna hear it

I don't care what you want to hear.
People were talking about Friends, a show soon to leave Thursday, and I was just stating how this is not such a bad thing in my opinion because the show went downhill.
And what do you mean I can't come here and voice my opinion?
Get a grip, it's an opinion. I didn't attack anybody or say anything about another poster (which many people do)
Just who are you to tell me what to do?

Oh hell, will you PLEASE shut your trap? No one cares about what you wanna here, these boards aren't tailor made for you. If he went and posted that on the Friends board you'd get all mad. This board is about NBC next year and Friends' cancellation (which is something I can't wait for!). He was talking about how they've made Friends so dumb and affection grabbing over these last few years. And I couldn't agree more, I mean they're trying to make all of the characters lovable. I mean, what's up with that? I just can't wait till it gets cancelled and forgotton, because it's been on for like an eternity. Shows don't need to last long to gain sucess. Look at "The Munsters" and "Gilligan's Island."
Attmay 10-08-2002, 10:38 PM You think they'd actually ask for something different from Friends? One of the reasons I've curbed my TV watching (and begged for TV shows I CAN bear to watch to come out on DVD) is because of all the Friends wannabes that have come on in the wake of the show's success. I estimate that 90% of the sitcoms to come on in the past 8 years have been Friends wannabes.
And stop the fighting, please.
LucyCompanyPhan 10-09-2002, 04:51 PM right-o fine im not gonna waste my not arguing over something that isnt worth it. its over and done with. sorry i spazed, i was just really mad, just hear me out ok?
Everytime someone even meantions friends, people freak out and talk about how much they hate the show and im just sick of it. i know that everyone hates something and that everybody can state their opinons BUT maybe i dont like The Brady Bunch, but is it fair that everytime someone states something about it, that i should talk about how much I hate the show and how it should be banned from tv? no because the brady bunch fans dont wanna hear it and i rather avoid an arguement. so rather than blasting everytime u disagree, why cant we not say anything and let it go. fighting doesnt change anything.
Sitcomwriter 10-10-2002, 03:06 PM I have to admit Friends really is starting to suck. The 1st 2 or 3 years were great.I was able to tolerate the last 3 or 4 but this season I just can't.I mean last week I almost went back online instead! The writing just isn't there anymore and the humor isn't either. It seems like all current Long-Running sitcoms like Friends and Will and Grace are trying to get too sappy and dramatic sort of like a soap opera with a laugh track not that a little drama is a BAD thing but enough is enough!
