I heard that in order to gain more viewers to the channel NBC tried to launch a weekday daytime game show hour in the 90's and they hoped with the addition of Caesars Challenge and Scattergories and the final season of Scrabble NBC would develop more daytime shows in the future after Classic Concentration ended it's run in 1991 but soon after the failure of Scattergories and the cancellation of Caesars Challenge in 1993 NBC chose to no longer air daytime game shows during weekday mornings. What caused NBC no longer showing interest in developing original daytime game shows for weekdays during the 90's? You might think NBC would put a game show in Days Of Our Lives old timeslot today

There were probably a couple of factors that led to NBC no longer airing daytime game shows. First was many affiliates opting for syndicated talk shows, a problem since the late 1970s when Phil Donahue surged in popularity and opened the door for others such as Sally Jessy Raphael and Oprah. The trend continued when David Letterman's talk show was a major flop and stations dropped the show and stayed with talk shows in that time period.

Second, the network's troubles in the noon ET time period which aired many failures such as The Magnificent Marble Machine, Mindreaders and Just Men. By the 1980s, a lot of affiliates opted for local news or syndicated programming.

I think why NBC lost interest in daytime game shows in the 90's was because after the end of Classic Concentration in 1991 and with the short-lived game shows Scattergories and Caesars Challenge NBC knew that they wouldn't have another successful daytime game show in the 90's. But I really think that NBC should really think about developing a daytime game show hour again and one of the shows they should reboot is Concentration and make it a huge hit and also they should revive 1 Vs 100 this time with Jeff Goldblum replacing the late Bob Saget and develop a new reboot of The $64,000 Question with Will Poulter as the host and believe me this daytime lineup would be huge for NBC to do and it would give NBC big ratings

The only game shows NBC will ever run again will be in prime time. Unfortunately they gave up after “Caesar’s” in daytime after 1994.

And….all these prime time games are 1 hour long, with contestants telling their whole life stories, relatives & significant-others on stage with them telling their own stories, etc. Yawn. Then you have the all-important “suspense” feature (lights dimmed, soft drum-roll….) on every show.

That goes back to the format of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” which was copied over and over by different shows in different ways. See “Deal or No Deal.”

NBC has been sitting on “Concentration” since 1991, but doesn’t know what to do with it. NBC has the rights. If any new Concentration will be back, trust me, it will be an hour in prime time, with some new “bonus round” with the suspense mentioned above. How would they do that? I dunno, but mark it down, they would think of a way.

The two CBS daytime game shows have only 38 minutes of “game” in the hour. “Let’s Make a Deal” is constructed to run like a nighttime show with the features mentioned above. “Price Is Right” I stopped watching for a reason I will not say here; but I will say that it squeezes so much in those 38 minutes, trying to keep the original format intact.
