Yes, I know this is strictly opinion, but heck, that is what we are here for right? Not a show you just didn't like, but a show that other people seem to just love and you don't get why. My top five are

1. All in the Family
2. Mary Tyler Moore
3. The Beverly Hillbillies
4. Roseanne
5. Full House

I know some people are going to jump me but that is my list. Its not that I never laughed at any of these but all in all they are irritating as hell. All in the family which was controversial at the time now seems dated and bland. That is why you should never include politics in your show because when people watch it 30 years from now it seems dated. Besides, Archie was just a jerk and a bigot that I have no idea why people thought he was funny. Ok I get why Mary Tyler makes some people laugh, but for me it just doesent do it. The BH was just garbage that did the same joke for every show. Roseanne was simply fat people yelling at each other all the time and Full House.....UGH. It was like eating sugar for a half an hour...wait that would be better.

5. All in the Family

I know they're all popular, well-loved shows, but I've never found them funny.

Of some of televisions most honored series I would say that M*A*S*H* is in my opinion the most over-rated. It started out as a wonderfully funny satire and then as the years went by it lost its edge as all the characters "evolved" into sensitive and dedicated people. Hawkeye was no longer a skirt chaser, Hot Lips became Margaret, Klinger stopped wearing drag, Frank (the only consistently funny character in his portrayal of the gung-ho dirty American) left the show and was replaced by Charles who was a good and dedicated doctor who was a snob but eventually fit in with Hawk and BJ. I would say this show ran six years too long.

I agree on that MASH ran too long but I think maybe 3 years or so not six. Some of those shows being overrated I also agree with but I only had room for five. I laughed at Seinfield and even thought it was funny at times but never as much as everybody else did, same thing with Cheers. I never liked Friends either very much.

I don't understand what the dern deal is with "seinfeld." What makes people think it's the greastest show ever is beyond me. I mean I'm sure there are a LOT of people who would put Lucy over Seinfeld, but E! and TVGuide have this strange feeling that people like it when Seinfeld beats out the classics. On a "RANK" online poll, it was "what TV comedy would you like to see in primetime again?" and the number one answer was "Seinfeld," even though the friggin show went off the air 4 years ago. I still can't believe my precious "Three's Company" excluded off of the 25 best comedies list, while "Seinfeld" was #1. But, fortunatly, the cast is paying for it, considering that not one of them was able to get a steady TV job, or movie career after the show ended. And hopefully, the cast of "Friends" will end up the same.

MASH for sure. It just didn't have any of the greatness that the film had and often had nothing funny going for it. I actually found AFTERMASH to be more amusing.

I agree with you about Seinfeld! I have never watched Friends so I can't comment on that one!
By the way I love your Knots picture! How I miss that show!:(

All in the Family...

The show nags on for 20 minutes about Archie being racist, or the 'Meathed' and Gloria being friends with people of another religion. It's a buncha crap. It's an alrite show sometimes... But, when I'm not in the mood, I get mad at it.

Archie Bunker's Place (IMO) is quite better. In laughs, and the problems keep you interested, withOUT getting you a little angry and annoyed.

I would have to say...

MASH, The whole military thing just doesn't interest me is all
I Love Lucy (just a little), It's a good show, just not THAT good
The Facts Of Life, although it didn't get super-great ratings
Knots Landing, Dynasty, Falcon Crest, I thought Dallas was a lot better than these

You hate Seinfeld and Friends so much that you actually wish the ACTORS bad luck in their careers? That sounds strange and sort of bitter. I would never wish bad luck on anyone, especially for being on a TV show that I didn't like. Better watch out for that bad karma...

I'm not really trying to wish them bad luck, I just hope that they get a little typecast, which I'm sure they will. I mean, being on the number one show does have it's disadvantages, and typecast is a large disadvantage.

If you are in TV, it is really hard to make the transition into Movies, especially without being typecasted. And Im sure as long as they are making money, that doesn't bother them much. Jennifer Aniston has not been typecasted yet though, and was just in a pretty good movie. She will probably have a great career in movies. The others, I'm not sure about. Lisa Kudrow has been pretty successful. Hoping people will have bad after-careers and be typecasted is pretty bitter though.

Just look at the careers of the actors of a lot of other shows... crash and burn is what I'd say. And how is being typecast a "large disadvantage"? I think them being #1, and them winning Emmys pretty much outweighs that.

OK, why does it seem that every time I mention not liking "Friends," JanLady holds me down, while GoldenFamilyTies goes for the kill. If you think that I'm bitter, GO AHEAD AND THINK IT!!!!! As long as I know I'm not being bitter. What is with you people?!?!?! If I want them to be typecast, what's it to you? It's my opinion, not yours, so don't expect me to change my mind and say "I don't want them to be typecast. I want them to get on lots of TV shows and do a lot of movies." Get it through your thick heads that I don't like "Friends," and I think the actors are terrible at their jobs. If you don't agree, then that's fine, but you don't have to hunt me down like an animal every time I say something. And don't come back with that whole "You have to understand that there are a lot of Friends fans here." business either. There are sure as hell more Friends-haters here than Friends-lovers, trust me, and I don't think I have to sustain from saying my opinion.

And we can't say our opinions either? I have disagreed with a lot of different people on here, not just you. I'm not nasty about it at all, and I respectfully state my opinion. And when did we say you couldn't state your opinion? And you get made at us for replying to hate-comments made by you? Last time I checked, not a lot of people were making hate-comments about the same show in many threads. This thread asked which shows you thought were overrated, and why. Not whether or not you want casts of shows typecasted or not. And who are you to be calling people thick-headed?

JT

The thread asked for overrated shows and why, and I did that, but I added something extra. It's called starting a coversation, but I guess you see it as starting a fight...

If you didn't always feel the need to add negative comments to the main subject of the post, then I wouldn't care. I know you don't like Friends, I know you never will, but if you just had put. "I don't like Seinfelds because I can't get into the show" or something like that, then I wouldn't have a problem with that. But then saying all that stuff you did, and then adding in you hope the Friends cast gets typecasted -- that's where I have a problem.

Holding you down...going in for the kill? Sounds paranoid to me. I agreed with him in another thread--big deal--others agreed and posted that you were being harsh about Friends.
As for this thread, I think it's lousy to wish the entire cast of ANY show bad careers when their shows end. You expressed satisfaction that the Seinfeld cast hasn't done well. That's mean-spirited in my opinion. These people never did anything to you...they were only in shows you hate.
Nobody hunted you down like an animal either. This is a public forum. If you post negative remarks, expect a few rebuttals. You're entitled to your opinion, but is wishing actors bad luck even an opinion? Would you appreciate if I said I think it's great that the cast of Knot's Landing faded into the sunset after the show ended? I don't take pleasure in anyone's misfortune.
You use every opportunity to express your intense hatred for Friends--an Emmy thread or an Overrated Show thread--you work it in somehow. I get it, you hate Friends--so much that you hope their careers go sour.
I don't appreciate your thick headed remark either.

I agree with you about Cheers-It's no reason for that show to be on 4 times a night. I did give Cheers a chance three nights in a row and it just didn't grab my interest.

With the crazed reactions people get for others thinking a show is overrated, I think everyone needs to calm down.

I posted on this board a topic "Shows with good reputations that you just can't watch"

I think that sums up people's attitudes here.

Yet I find, even in this topic, shows that I think do not have a reputation for excellence, yet people list them anyway.

I mean someone listed "Full House."
Is that show considered a great show and can therefore be overrated?

I don't think so.

I agree that we can hopefully disagree without fighting. When I began the thread I meant overrated to be any show that was very successful not really critically acclaimed. As far as that goes, Full House was very successful for 8 years so it can be called overrated. I think that good discussions are ones that have some debate, as long as they don't get personal. I mean somebody listed SOAP and MASH as overrated, two shows I like very much and I don't get all bent out of shape about it. By the way, just my opinion but Friends is VERY overrated and history will judge it as such. If you look at a show like Seinfield it may well have been very highly rated when it was on but I don't think it will stand the test of time. 30 years from now is it going to considered classic tv? That is really what I meant by overrated in the first place.
