As the series continued, more aspects of the regenerative process were introduced, but the basic concepts of regeneration as accepted by fans of the series today were only firmly established in the final scene of Planet of the Spiders (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_of_the_Spiders) (1974), when Pertwee's Third Doctor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Doctor) turns into Tom Baker (https://www.reddit.com/r/doctorwho/comments/192dett/so_this_year_marks_the_fiftieth_anniversary_of/)'s Fourth Doctor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Doctor). In this scene, the change is referred to with the word "regenerate" for the first time, and is explained as a biological process — "the cells will regenerate" — that occurs when a Time Lord's body is dying. It is also stated that following the regeneration the Doctor's brain cells would be shaken up and his behaviour would be "erratic" for a time, something that would be evident for most subsequent regenerations.
