I look at the history of Disney's mature film label Touchstone Pictures (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/TouchstonePictures) and how it helped the Mouse House succeed with star-driven comedies, unique animated movies and popular action movies.

Happy 35th birthday, Touchstone. Also, give Touchstone to Bruckheimer, Disney!

With this week's release of Touchstone's "The Light Between Oceans", I present my theory on whether this will be the last film for Disney's grown up film division (https://www.quora.com/Why-did-Disney-shut-down-Touchstone-Pictures).

What exactly is the deal with Touchstone and Disney (https://www.quora.com/What-caused-Touchstone-Pictures-to-become-defunct-and-why)? Find out as Joseph Worthington uncovers the Touchstone Pictures story, and discuss further in the comments below.

Touchstone Pictures (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchstone_Pictures) was born out of the Disney studio’s urgent need to expand their reach beyond the usual family demo. Movies in the 70s and 80s were getting edgier, pushing boundaries in ways that left Walt Disney Productions on the verge of spiraling into G-rated irrelevance. But the studio faced a big challenge – how to embrace films (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Touchstone_Pictures_films) that skewed older and more mature while still honoring the squeaky-clean Disney brand? The solution was Touchstone Pictures, an alternate label that became the home for Disney’s less wholesome fare. And the results were a staggering success. Ed Wood, Pretty Woman, Con Air, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Unbreakable – Touchstone Pictures excelled in creating high-quality pop culture classics. Each of those aforementioned movies opened with the signature Touchstone logo, that eye-catching blue circle and lightning bolt. Except the gold streak ISN’T a lightning bolt. That’s right. We’ve all been wrong! Join me as I dive into the logo-verse to reveal the TRUE meaning behind this mysterious image -- while also recounting the difficult history that led to the creation of Touchstone Pictures.

"Into the Logo-Verse" is a series of mini documentaries exploring the history behind the most iconic movie logos of all time. Discover the fascinating stories and little-known facts that provide a whole new perspective on these often overlooked gems.

When Disney decided to open up a second company to attract the adult market Disney had it right on the money because with this new company Disney knew that they could focus on the adult crowd other than the family oriented movies Disney was known for. And so when Touchstone Pictures was christened and made their debut with their first movie which was Splash with Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah in 1984 Touchstone Pictures was destined to become big. Soon with movies like Beaches with Bette Midler Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts Father Of The Bride and other movies Touchstone Pictures was making a huge name for themselves. But it wasn't until Who Framed Roger Rabbit debuted in 1988 that made Touchstone Pictures well-known but I can't figure out why they classify Who Framed Roger Rabbit as a kids/family movie when in reality it really isn't yet Disneyland has the Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin ride in the Mickey's Toontown section of the park. But with all their movies becoming monster hits Touchstone Pictures had scored a few flops like 1987's Can't Buy Me Love which started a young Patrick Dempsey on the road to stardom. But even so Touchstone Pictures still survived. And once Touchstone Pictures had begun developing hit movies they opened up a TV division called Touchstone Television and had hit shows like Blossom and Empty Nest and The Golden Girls. But why I think Touchstone Pictures went belly up was because Buena Vista Entertainment "which Disney owns" really wanted to have their own company and it couldn't happen Buena Vista/Disney focused on it's television division. But once Hollywood Pictures was founded Touchstone Pictures knew that the time had come to an end and Disney also had Miramax Pictures to focus on they knew it was the end for Touchstone Pictures. Will Touchstone Pictures make a comeback like Orion Pictures did? Only time will tell

I discuss the possibility of Disney reviving Touchstone Pictures (https://www.google.com/search?q=Touchstone+Pictures+site:www.reddit.com&sca_esv=3f3f4933d0200e18&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWILL7JYPi01hWTSpfecxuC4pn_trzA:1718753165824&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjm956_puaGAxWHHDQIHdAZBmYQrQIoBHoECE4QBQ&biw=1920&bih=1065&dpr=1#ip=1)and how that fits into their current plans for 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures.

Its sad..... Touchstone video started ruining analogue movies in the 80s on VHS...

They were DIGITALLY PROCESSED and werent as good at all.....

Thankfully I got RUTHLESS PEOPLE (1986) in pure analogue but "Adventures in Babysitting" (1987) I can (so far) only find "Presented in Digitally processed hi-fi stereo"

That wouldnt be so bad if they left the linear track analogue but they dont :(

Most people have no idea this studio ever existed.

But if you grew up in the 1980s and 1990s — you watched their films constantly. You quoted them. You wore out the VHS tapes. You fell in love with the characters.

Pretty Woman. Good Morning Vietnam. Dead Poets Society. The Color of Money. Three Men and a Baby. Sister Act. Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Down and Out in Beverly Hills. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.

All of them made by Disney.

Not the Disney you think of. A different Disney. A braver Disney. A Disney that believed adult audiences deserved genuinely great films — and proved it with some of the most beloved and most profitable movies of the entire era.
Touchstone Pictures. Created in 1984. Quietly killed in 2018. And the story of why it died explains more about what happened to Hollywood than almost anything else.

This is the rise and fall of the studio that Hollywood forgot. And the argument for why its death sent a signal that the entire industry is still paying for today.
