Two completely separate issues.

Sports in the U.S. is a business. Most Players have a very short time-frame to play before they get injured or are too old. Players are naturally going to make the most money they can in that time-frame. I'd do it too. The positive way it could effect poverty is the more they make, the more the government takes in taxes. Government could take a huge junk of that tax revenue and devote it to poverty, but it depends on the Administration and their priorities.
