Of all the sports movies I have never figured out how Disney's The Mighty Ducks even got created? Because after it's release in 1992 I never knew The Mighty Ducks would become a movie franchise with the sequels and even a real Anaheim hockey team was created in honor of the movies. Was Disney very afraid that The Mighty Ducks would fail when it debuted in theaters and so they planned more sequels to help gain an audience? I think out of all the Disney sports movies The Mighty Ducks is one movie that a lot of people liked and they didn't expect it to be a hit at first

Hockey was a growing sport in California in the late 1980s/early 1990s because the Los Angeles Kings had Wayne Gretzky playing for them. I think Disney wanted to cash in on the popularity.
The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were founded in 1993 by The Walt Disney Company after the success of The Mighty Ducks movie in 1992.
As a big hockey fan, I own the Mighty Ducks trilogy on DVD. I haven't watched the Disney+ series yet.
Why Disney turned The Mighty Ducks movie into an actual NHL team

There was also an animated series that ran for 2 years.

As a big hockey fan, I've never seen the Mighty Ducks, nor do I ever plan to.
Maybe it's different when you grow up in a hockey city as opposed to a warm weather city. Of course, I was retired as a serious hockey player before the movie came along.
