HEATS UP THURSDAY NIGHTS

The Farewell Season of ‘The Conners’ and New Seasons of Powerhouse Dramas

‘The Rookie’ and ‘Will Trent’ Return Midseason Along With Unscripted Fan Favorites

On the heels of its fifth consecutive season as the No. 1 entertainment network among Adults 18-49, ABC announced its 2024-2025 fall primetime schedule today. The lineup features new scripted dramas backed by prolific creative teams and a deep bench of established fan-favorite series. Additionally, “The Bachelor” franchise expands with its newest iteration.

“We have a lot to celebrate as we gear up to deliver a fall season that’s packed with compelling new series, beloved fan favorites and must-see live events,” said Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group. “We’re focused on driving our viewership with an expanding slate anchored by best-in-class talent and supported by the enviable and combined reach of ABC and Hulu.”

From the brilliant mind of Ryan Murphy and starring Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson, comes high-octane procedural “Doctor Odyssey.” Max (Jackson) is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all hands on deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore. The series joins the Thursday night lineup alongside “9-1-1,” which is currently tied as the season’s No. 1 drama in Adults 18-49, and the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history, “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Joining the beloved competition series “Dancing with the Stars” on Tuesdays is freshman drama “High Potential,” from Oscar®-nominated writer Drew Goddard and based on the popular French series. The crime procedural stars the incomparable Kaitlin Olson as Morgan, a single mom with an exceptional mind whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective.

After more than 43 million viewers tuned in to the debut of “The Golden Bachelor” across platforms last fall, “The Golden Bachelorette” joins the Wednesday night lineup, where one radiant woman in her golden years will have a second chance at finding love. Then, a new season of Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award-winning comedy “Abbott Elementary” will premiere, followed by the ABC News Studios documentary series “Scamanda.” Based on the No. 1 podcast of the same name, “Scamanda” tells the story of Amanda Riley — a wife, mother, blogger and Christian — whose tragic cancer tale captivates thousands. But Amanda has a secret that she’s dying to keep, and after an anonymous tip to an investigative reporter, her own words may prove to be her downfall.

These shows will be joined in the fall by previously announced returning unscripted staples “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” which celebrates a monumental 35th season, and “Shark Tank,” as well as popular films under “The Wonderful World of Disney” umbrella.

New seasons of returning dramas “The Rookie” and “Will Trent” will debut midseason, along with the celebratory farewell season of legacy comedy “The Conners.” Also returning midseason are “American Idol,” “The Bachelor,” “Celebrity Jeopardy!,” “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” and “What Would You Do?” “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” from executive producer Reese Witherspoon and hosted by world-renowned organizing duo Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin of The Home Edit, is also set to debut.

All episodes will be available next day on Hulu.

Fall premiere dates will be announced soon, and additional midseason announcements will be made at a later time.

I thought the new Tim Allen sitcom was coming midseason (which was already messed up, he should have led off Wednesdays in a big fall promotional push). What a horrendous schedule.

I think too many veteran scripted shows are being held for midseason next season (other examples are Family Guy and the 2023 Night Court sequel series). I understand The Conners's final season being held for midseason with its only six episodes, but Will Trent and The Rookie also being held for midseason is overkill, and this is only because of ABC deciding to once again regularly telecast Monday Night Football this season, and not just because of Dancing with the Stars (even if it's just for one cycle per year going forward). A show being held for midseason will mean its season order will be fewer than 20 episodes, which will hurt its syndication prospects. I don't care about streaming changing the rules. This is how NCIS: Hawai'i got screwed over, not being able to get a full third season because of the "Strikemageddon" of 2023 and ending up cancelled while still ranking in the Nielsen Top 20 for its third season. Are Will Trent and The Rookie already in cancellation danger?

Fall premiere dates. Surprise: Pat Sajak will host Celebrity Wheel of Fortune for one more season! It will air Mondays at 8:00 on weeks ABC doesn't have football. But what happened to Tim Allen's new sitcom, is it still in development? Still really stupid they didn't make that in time for fall to lead off Wednesdays.

Another midseason schedule-change prediction.

So I have The Conners shooting for a first-week-of-the-new-year premiere date for its farewell season, and then, once The Conners finishes its six-episode order, Shifting Gears debuts around mid-to-late-February, Between The Conners/Shifting Gears and Abbott Elementary, which should be in the anchor slot, and which should be in the hammock slot?

BREAKING NEWS: ABC Signature to Shut Down and Be Absorbed Into 20th Television.

Honestly, I am very disappointed to see a broadcast network to be forced to actually shut down its in-house production studio. Another good reason to resent The Disney Company's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

I will have to wait until 2025 to see Celebrity Wheel of Fortune which is still hosted by Pat Sajak. ABC has added six more Monday Night Football games, which has pushed Celebrity Wheel and Press Your Luck to 2025. Scamanda is also being delayed with What Would You Do? moving to Wednesdays at 10:00. Strange move to delay the premiere of a new series for something that has been filler. But this is the stupid network that gutted their comedy night insisting on expanding the Bachelor franchise. Golden Bachelorette is doing terrible against Survivor like I knew it would, enjoy your 4th place reality trash ABC.

ABC is changing the Only Murders in the Building schedule on Thursdays. Next week on January 9 there will be only two episodes instead of three, at 9:02 and 9:51. With 10 episodes in season 2 I guess they will air three on the 16th and two on the 23rd, or the other way around. At 10:37 on the 9th is What Would You Do? for 23 minutes.

When this broadcast season began, I thought there was going to be a real battle to see which of High Potential and Doctor Odyssey would have the better chance of becoming ABC's next long-running series. Good to see High Potential living up to its name by earning a season 2 renewal (https://deadline.com/2025/01/high-potential-renewed-season-2-abc-kaitlin-olson-1236262722/) because of impressive ratings and viewership. But does High Potential's renewal mean Doctor Odyssey ending up cancelled after one season, meaning High Potential ultimately winning out in this battle?

Shifting Gears only had a 10 episode order. I would have thought it got an extension with how strong it has been, but I also assumed the initial order was for the standard 13 episodes not just 10. The Conners will lead off the night then at 8:00/7:00, with Shifting Gears season finale the week before.

Why is this year's Celebrity Jeopardy! tournament skipping a week? The next quarterfinal game won't air until February 26. All the other networks are all new with their entire lineups tonight, but the only thing new ABC has is What Would You Do?, preceded by repeats of Shifting Gears and the second Celebrity Jeopardy! quarterfinal (aired January 15).

But I have wondered if Celebrity Jeopardy is even returning next year. It hasn't been advertised at all during Shifting Gears lately, the last few episodes I have seen on demand with local coverups removed.

I could have also asked the same thing about Shifting Gears. I think either Shifting Gears of Celebrity Jeopardy! skipping a week on (February 19) is pointless. I should have had both program's seasons run uninterrupted (normally I would feel that way only for Celebrity Jeopardy!). I don't really care for repeats on the broadcast networks.

Also, will the sixth episode of The Conners's final season be an hour long (pre-empting Abbott Elementary), or will all six of that season's installments each be 30 minutes?

ABC sure is taking their time to announce when Celebrity Wheel of Fortune with Pat Sajak still hosting is coming back. It deserved the post American Idol slot more than $100,000 Pyramid, or would have been more compatible with Celebrity Jeopardy! than What Would You Do? and random fillers.

MAJOR BREAKING NEWS (Not related to ABC programming, but still...): ABC is losing its affiliate in Miami (WPLG) after the end of the current broadcast season. It had been the only broadcast station in the Miami–Fort Lauderdale market that has not switched networks (or even channel numbers). After August 4, 2025, WPLG will become an independent station with an expanded local news schedule, and the ABC affiliation will move to FOX affiliate WSVN's 7.2 subchannel. This will make Miami–Fort Lauderdale the largest American television market, and the first top-30 television market, with a subchannel-only Big Four (or original Big Three) network affiliate.

Jeopardy Masters is expanding to 9 contestants this year from 6 contestants the previous two seasons.

^^I guess this could be the result of a decision to have all of the finalists for this year's Tournament of Champions rather than just the winner of this year's Tournament of Champions be part of this year's Jeopardy! Masters, and such a decision could be because the regular-play cash winnings of the actual winner of this year's ToC (Neilesh Vinjamuri) are so tiny (only $58,000; in fact, Mr. Vinjamuri has the tiniest regular-play winnings of any ToC winner ever) while the regular play winnings for both of the losing finalists of this year's ToC (Adriana Harmeyer and Isaac Hirsch) did cross the $100,000 mark.

ABC has changed their original schedule for Jeopardy Masters and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. Jeopardy Masters will now have its final two episodes air new back-to-back from 8-10 on Wednesday, June 4. What would have been a new episode on Tuesday June 3 at 9:00 is now a repeat. Celebrity Wheel will still be new that night. It would have been new on the 4th where the Masters doubleheader is now. UPDATE: Well, guess what? Neilesh Vinjamuri got eliminated after the first round of Jeopardy! Masters (in fact, getting no match points at all and not getting past the knockout round as a result, thereby failing to reach the quarterfinals). That's what he gets for not getting remotely close to $80,000 in regular play.

Adriana Harmeyer was also eliminated after the knockout round. The only difference is, she got two match points total (one in each game she was in).
