I'm shocked the Waltons did not use Champ the dirt fighter.

What the camera missed was Paul Winchell directing Jim Bob, telling him what to say in a Safe commercial.

Does anyone know if there ever really was such a thing as Safe Detergent or if that box was just made as a prop?

I can't find any info regarding a brand of soap called SAFE. If you google it, you get lists of safe laundry soap.

I did find this though.

"In the final season of The Waltons, Ike Godsey's store was stocked with The Bradys' Safe Laundry Detergent. It would be interesting to hear how it ended up at Warner Brothers. It does seem like it was created specifically for that Brady Bunch episode. "

Yes all the products in sitcoms are fake brands otherwise it would be an advertisement or they would have to pay royalties or enter into some sort of contract. I have seen some sitcoms tape over a soda name on a can on the table. The Brady Bunch even used fake magazines and fake newspapers. This is the norm of most sitcoms especially in the 70s.

When products are shown in movies its a huge deal. Coke was supposed to pay and be majorly featured in the movie Grease. The actors were going to drink from coke glasses and sit in the soda shop with posters of Coke everywhere. But the deal fell through so Coke products were scrubbed from the movie. I believe when John Travolta sings at the Drive In and a cartoon is played behind him, the glass was supposed to have Coke on it.

On the Real Brady Bros they do mention the few times the Bradys did promote something. When the Bradys go to Hawaii, the hotel chain is featured. When they buy the Camper for the Grand Canyon, the brand is mentioned. There is also some sort of ad on the car driving the Bradys to the hotel in the Hawaii episode. They speculate a deal was worked out for lower hotel rates for such promotion on the show.

When the Bradys visit Kings Island, that's a very big promotion of the park. For a sitcom, about as big as they get...!

Yes. Paramount owned the park so they made sure to promote their own.
