The 92-year-old Rather will appear this weekend in a profile on CBS Sunday Morning. “Lee Cowan talks with former CBS News anchor Dan Rather about his work at CBS and his life in news," says a CBS News press release. The interview will mark Rather's first appearance on CBS News since he was forced off the network in June 2006 (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/rather-leaves-cbs-news/) after 44 years over his role in an unsubstantiated 60 Minutes II report questioning President Bush’s Vietnam-era National Guard service. His exit came after he came a year after he was forced to step down from CBS Evening News in March 2005 after a 24-year tenure as its anchor. Rather, who said he was the scapegoat in the scandal, sued CBS over his ouster (https://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/20/business/media/20cbs.html). Rather's scandal was turned into the 2015 film Truth, starring Robert Redford as Rather. In recent years, Rather has been known for his presence on Twitter/X (https://www.thedailybeast.com/dan-rather-on-trolling-ted-cruz-tucker-carlson-and-the-state-of-the-news-media), where he has trolled conservatives.

It's been almost 20 years since Dan Rather signed off as anchor and managing editor of the "CBS Evening News," at the network where he spent 44 years covering wars, politics, and the assassination of JFK – and where he mentored a young correspondent named Lee Cowan. Rather, now 92, talks with Cowan about his illustrious career; about the story that gave him (and CBS) a black eye; and his post-CBS years, writing books and finding a new, younger audience on social media.

"Extended interview: Dan Rather" (video) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFmu9ok8g4U)
In this extended interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" correspondent Lee Cowan, legendary CBS News veteran Dan Rather, now 92, talks about his early life and years in broadcasting, including his experiences with Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite; his proudest moments as a correspondent; the effects that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the Vietnam War had on his reporting; the role of social media in journalism today; and why covering some stories means that journalists must accept "danger is your business."
