I have watched Alice for many years and one thing I noticed is when Alice took a singing job outside the diner, Mel constantly complained about her moonlighting to make extra money. Was it true that Mel hated moonlighting?

I guess Mel preferred to watch what was on one of the rival networks.

Some bosses think you can't give your 100% to your job if you have another job

^That's right. He probably felt if she sang in clubs at night she would be too tired to be a good waitress the next day at Mel's.

Ha, Mel himself kept moonlighting on the Love Boats. He's Shelly and goes on a computer date with Leslie aka Mr. Drummond (Conrad Bain). In another episode, he plays the onboard barnacle of a diesel mechanic.

When it came to moonlighting, Mel was especially rough on Alice because she needed the extra money to help support herself and her son Tommy. Her fellow waitresses were single and childless.

Mel was right about Alice; we saw how she could barely keep her eyes open at Mel's after working a late-night singing gig.

I'd like to know how these people barely making min wage can afford those nice apartments lol. I'm making pretty good living on my own, the income based apartment I live in isn't near as nice as Alice's, I'd assume Alice's was also income based

It was really none of Mel's business what Alice or the other ladies did when they was not working at the diner
