O'Connor was aware that the success of the series didn't rest solely on his shoulders.

I usually feel anyone can leave a show and as long as it has great writing and a proper replacement, it can survive. But in this case, I don't know what the show would become. If Carroll O'Connor left during, let's just say season 6, Archie would have to die. It's not like he would just divorce Edith and move away. So, then you have Edith as a widow with Mike and Gloria. This show feeds on conflict. Mike, Gloria and Edith all get along most of the time. Who would they get into conflict with?
I don't know. Maybe it could have been done, but I'm having a tough time picturing it.

The irony is that his character was the most loved by fans.
In some ways the creators of the show were out of touch.

Did he mean if HE left the show instead of Jean? If so, yeah I think it could have gone on with just Edith. But if he meant with both he and Edith gone, I don't think it could go on as All in the Family anymore, maybe as something else
