View Full Version : The misuse of Potsie from 80-84
jewlmc 09-23-2002, 02:08 PM I think TPTB missed a great and potential funny opportunity when RH and DM left by letting Potsie just drift off.
Frankly instead of bringing Roger in, they should have had Potsie intern at the High School (Like a School Psychology kind of thing) and of course have Fonzie work there. They would have to work together and you KNOW how Fonzie would have felt about that. To me that would have been INFINATELY more funny than bringing on a Richie wannabe in Roger.
Plus it would have been interesting to see after all the years of just being barely friendly with Potsie...Fonzie becoming good friends with him.
I don't know...It just seemed a shame. I never connected with Roger or any of the other new people like the Old gang. Except for maybe Jenny.
Just a thought.
animalcrackers 09-24-2002, 08:41 AM I just wished they didn't make Potsie such an idiot. I wonder how Anson felt about his character? Anyway, I still love him.
richheart 09-25-2002, 10:52 AM More like "misuse of television" during those years.
Sorry. But I never cared for the show by that time. It went from one of the greatest shows in tv history to one of the worst. Things started getting bad when they went to a live audience years before that.
But you have a good point. Expanding Potsie's character might have been a better thing to do, rather than bringing in Roger.

Gotta agree with you. It went from great to worst in a matter of seconds. One second Ron and Donny leave and the next second later they bring in McGinely. I can see why people tease the guy on jumptheshark.com. Every show he comes into is abruptly canceled or the show gets crappy.
Dr. Thong 01-05-2009, 01:08 PM It was pretty clear that the writers had no clue what to do with the character without Richie and Ralph there as his sidekicks. They seemed to randomly insert him into the shows, oftentimes in a scene that had nothing to do with the main storyline.
They tried a storyline where he was working for Howard at the hardware store and almost making him like a surrogate son, but it didn't work.
I imagine it had to have been tough for Anson Williams. After all, in the very beginning, he was Richie's best friend and had more of a role. He was in the opening credits first season while Henry Winkler wasn't.
Then, Fonzie came from out of left field as a popular character and pushed Potsie aside as Richie's best friend. On top of that, the character got dumber as the series progressed. I imagine it probably took a toll on Williams inside.
Williams himself has said publicly that once Ron and Donny left, "the magic was gone." Truer words have never been spoken.
Waterston_Fan 01-05-2009, 02:48 PM I don't like how they misused Potsie though.
I do wish they had used Marion and Tom more soon after Ron and Don left.
bluthree 01-05-2009, 04:10 PM Yeah Potsie seem to go to waste after Richie and Ralph left.I'm surprised that Anson Williams did not leave the show because of it. As Potsie was pushed to the end of the line during this period. And it seem like Fonzie, and others did not like him. And he was not included in the final episode of the series. I find it hard to believe that Potsie would not be at Short Cakes, and Chachis(However you spell his name?) wedding. Heck even Ralph was not at the wedding at the end.
MikeLutton 01-05-2009, 04:23 PM i know i think ralph charactor was finshed when he and richie returne from the army he went to dentist school least he had good send off with richie and tom made a mistake
on anniversary show when he said we was all together at the end which they wasnt

Same here. There really was no point in having Potsie around without Richie and Ralph (waits for Iris to start throwing tomatoes at me!). So, I wonder why they kept Anson Williams at all because Potsie didn't do much at all after 1980.
MikeLutton 01-05-2009, 05:25 PM i would of had potsie marry joanie instead of chachi now that would been good
bluthree 01-05-2009, 08:29 PM I also did not like the new people they brought it after Ron and Donny left.
There was a cousin named KC,we had Roger, and we had the annoying Jenny Picalo. Who was mentioned during the early years but was never scene.
And we also had the kids from Fonzies auto class room. I dont remember there names? I know one of the kids was played by an actor who went on to star in Baywatch. Dont remember the actors name?
catlover79 01-05-2009, 09:21 PM ^ I think you mean Billy Warlock, who played Flip Phillips, Roger's brother. Besides Baywatch, Billy Warlock also won a Daytime Emmy for his work on Days of Our Lives, and starred on General Hospital from 1997-2003.
robyrob 01-05-2009, 09:32 PM some of the other kids in Joanie and Chachi's class were semi-regulars like Bobby and Tommy, but they weren't very interesting.
I would've like to see them make Potsie the inept guidance counsellor

That's a good idea - it would've been fun to see Potsie giving kids inane advice.

Is it that what you want?
But seriously. Why should I? You are right. You all are. - Potsie by his own, without the Guys, wasn't the same. - And sad to watch...
catlover79 01-06-2009, 12:29 AM ^ Seriously, Anson Williams was just wasted after Ron Howard and Don Most left. I've always wondered why they kept him on...he and Fonzie weren't close, and he was too old to be hanging around Joanie, Chachi, Jenny, etc.
Waterston_Fan 01-06-2009, 01:27 AM Maybe they wanted Howie to have a third son.

Yeah ok Billy Warlock. Yeah He played Eddie in the first couple of seasons of Baywatch.
Yeah I also remember Billy Warlock also apeared in Halloween II.
spreckenzeedeu 01-06-2009, 03:50 PM Btw: Because it wasn't the same anymore, when Ralph (and Richie) were gone. And because I don't like the last Seasons. I wrote my very own Ending/Future. And even tho everybody is still there, it is different anyway.

Yeah I think they should of pulled the plug when Ron announced that he was leaving? The episodes that followed after Richie and Ralph left just did not have the magic feel to it. Bringing in new people that nobody cared about.
And then it did not seem like we was watching a 50's show anymore.
Of course the first 2 seasons was when Happy Days realy did feal like a 50's show. But then when they started shooting it to a live crowed it lost something. But still it was still fun to watch. But then after Richie and Ralph left it stopped being fun. You know I dont think I have scene all the episodes with out Ron and Don? I know I have scene all The Ron Howard years. When I tuned in to watch the reruns and scene it was one of the later ones I turned the channel. It was the same way with The Andy Griffith Show. Never was a fan of the color episodes of The Andy Griffith Show. No Don Knotts no watch for me.
Heidi Dawn 01-09-2009, 02:00 PM I'm actually suprised that Anson stayed on for as long as he did, I'm suprised he didn't leave along with Don and Ron. Even though I liked the Richie/Potsie/Ralph years, I did enjoy the last four seasons mainly because the Fonz was still on. Potsie and Ralph were always a hoot to watch together. Good to see Anson and Don working together again.

sure be happy 2 where is it
Dr. Thong 01-10-2009, 12:01 PM When Rob Reiner, Sally Struthers and Jean Stapleton left All In The Family, the show was retitled Archie Bunker's Place and refocused the show on his relationship with niece Stephanie and his interactions with his employees, friends and regulars at the bar he owned.
In a similar vein, I think it would have been better to retitle the show to something like Jefferson High once Ron and Donny left. It wasn't really Happy Days anymore - at least not the HD I grew up with - and would have framed the show in a different light.
Willsatx 01-10-2009, 01:11 PM I think Potsie worked with Mr C at the hardware store, but again he was made a fool in all his scenes. Again I think they could have made him a teacher and he would have been used better.

Yes, Potsie worked for Mr. C at Cunningham Hardware. Making him a teacher would've been a great idea. I wonder if Ralph Malph ever became an eye doctor (like his dad) after his stint in the Army.

Him working at the hardware store made him look even more foolish, I think they missed the boat.

I agree - because he really wasn't good at the job and Mr. C could barely tolerate him at times. Oh well. ohno:
bluthree 01-11-2009, 08:51 AM If I was Potisie I would of moved away. The 2 guys that liked you has moved on. And the people who remain dont care for you. Time to pack the bags and move on. Well in real life if that was the way with me I would of moved away.

Well said.
spreckenzeedeu 01-11-2009, 03:28 PM Making him a teacher would've been a great idea.
I stick with the Psychologist Idea. I like the Thought of him being One. And yeah, I really can imagine that. Maybe I'm the only one. Shrugs. It's okay...
Avilos 01-12-2009, 01:07 AM Anyone else think we should have seen Potsie's father? The later seasons would have been the perfect time to finally show him. It would have shown Postie's life beyond being a friend of the others.
Maybe his family was REALLY, REALLY, screwed up! The way his Dad treated him suggests that. Perhaps compared to them he was actually rather normal. Which is one of the reasons he acts the way he did. Playing the role of dummy because his family does not expect anything else from him. Which is why he wanted to study Psychology.

Great post!! I think you've got a lot of terrific ideas here. :D
spreckenzeedeu 01-12-2009, 11:28 AM Hey Avilos, guess what ... besides writing Potsie a different Future, I've also written about why his Father treated him that Way. And about why he always has been Dummy-like.
bluthree 01-13-2009, 02:52 PM Yeah we never did meet Potsies parents threw out the whole run of Happy Days. We met Ralph's dad. He was played by Jack Dodson, who like Ron was in The Andy Griffith Show.
Yeah they could of got another Andy Griffith Show star to play Potsies dad? Jim Nabors would of been nice. Or the actor that played Ernest T. Bass?
Also I assume Potsies family was at The High School Graduation in the Graduation episode? Where was they sitting? We know The Cunninghams,Spike,Al,and Arnold was at the gangs graduation. But where was Potsies family sitting? Come to think of it was Ralphs family in that episode too? I'll have to watch that episode again.
dave insinga 01-15-2009, 11:13 PM potsie still being ther after ralph and richie left was indeed a problem.besides the fonz, in earlier years ,the show was more centered around the three boys richie, ralph, and potsie.so what do you do with the one guy left, the story lines
were now joannie and chachi, and then jenny p.for a bit.where does potsie fit in?he and fonzie were never really close and to try and move them closer would have taken away from the legendary friendship of richie and the fonz.i dont agree with the way they turned the potsie character into such an idiot.
but where do you place him in those latter episodes.potsie always had a very big heart .turning him into an idiot was just wrong.perhaps bringing in roger
wasnt a great move either because he was even more goody, goody than richie himself.11 years is a longtime for a show to last.but its even a harder
task to keep the characters relovent to the show.so i guess keeping him around was a pity gester more than anything.if i was anson i would have left with richie and ralph.but this is something that just is what it is. i just could never understand why ralph or potsie were not included in the final episode
potsie was in the credits in the final season.i think i counted awhile back potsie was in less than half of the episodes in season 11 .

Hey Iris, I'm wondering if you've written any fanfic 'bout Potsie (in your post it seems you've written something, and I'm looking for it).
Anyway, there are some great fic on fanfiction.net.
It's interesting that every fic 'bout Potsie centered on his family (in a dramatic way).
Heidi Dawn 02-02-2009, 02:05 PM Iris, I would love to read your fanfics! I think Potsie should have been used more definitely, meeting his parents would have been great.
spreckenzeedeu 02-03-2009, 12:34 AM Yes, I have written a little something.
Synopsis' can be found at my Website. (http://de.geocities.com/iris_happydays/thisNthat.html)
If you pm/mail me your Email Addy, I'll send you a Copy of the first Story (as PDF.File) but you won't get the 2part Novel. That's private...
