Who are some actors who have starred (main cast members) in a successful TV sitcom and also a TV drama? I'm sure there are several and I think it'll make for an interesting discussion. I've thought of a few to get things started. I'm listing the actors, the shows they were in, along with the names of their characters.
Buddy Ebsen. The Beverly Hillbillies where he played Jed Clampett (sitcom). Barnaby Jones where he played the title character Barnaby Jones (crime drama).
Rene Auberjonois. Benson, he played the arrogant and snobbish Clayton Endicott III (sitcom). Star Trek: Deep Space 9, he played the DS9 chief of security changeling (or if you prefer shapeshifter) Odo (science fiction drama).
Ethan Phillips. Benson, he played Pete Downey (sitcom). Star Trek: Voyager, he played the Delta Quadrant alien from Talax named Neelix (science fiction drama). Yes, it's quite an interesting coincidence that two main cast members from the sitcom Benson would both later go on to star in spinoffs of Star Trek, and they both played aliens in those spinoffs.
Ted Danson. He starred in Cheers as retired baseball player and bar owner Sam Malone (sitcom). He was a main cast member in the last 4 seasons of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation as CSI team member D.B. Russell (crime drama). And yes I'll also mention he starred in the sitcom Becker as the title character Dr. John Becker.
