One of the most popular groups of the 80's was a group named Club Nouveau. Club Nouveau was founded by Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy who went on to create girl group En Vogue. If you grew up in the 80's you probably had the single record of their cover of Bill Withers hit Lean On Me which is the song Club Nouveau is best known for. Other Club Nouveau songs included Step By Step from the soundtrack of Madonna's movie Who's That Girl. I don't know if Club Nouveau split up or still singing but they were one of the popular 80's dance groups

Several members of Club Nouveau were also in the band The Timex Social Club, and scored a hit in 1986 with the song Rumors, a year before forming Club Nouveau and recording their hit version of Lean on Me:

I think I do remember that song Rumors because my radio station played it sometimes. But Club Nouveau's cover on Lean On Me is cool because they turn a friendship song from a ballad to a dance song and it's easily one of the best versions of Lean On Me i've ever heard. Did you also hear their other song Step By Step too?

I definitely liked their version of Lean on Me better than Rumors. I wasn't familiar with the song Step by Step. I never saw the Madonna movie Who's That Girl. I iniitially thought the reason they changed their name from The Timex Social Club to Club Nouveau was due to a copyright lawsuit by the watch manufacturer Timex, but I couldn't find any information regarding that and the band members didn't mention it in interviews that I read online.
