I'm 71 and when the show premiered I was 12 and was a faithful watcher. I liked it then and still do. That doesn't mean it isn't a real bad show. The plots are thin and the sets look cheap. Since I now stream all my TV I look for shows I watched back in the olden days. The theme song which I like a lot sounds more like it should be for a show set somewhere cosmopolitan. I like all the shots of Gidg making faces during the theme but the ones of Don Porter in his pastel outfits...PU.

What I like best about the show are the outfits Gidget wears. It is so nice to see all the clothes again that girls used to wear. It's also nice to see all the old faces of the nameless character actors. Seeing guest stars before they became "famous" is nice.

What I don't like are the outfits and hair styles the "ladies" wore in the show.

Only one more episode to go then I will move on to the Patty Duke Show which I have watched a couple of but it's looks bad as well. That's OK though I will watch them all and have fun doing it

Do you mean you like the clothes the kids wear, but not the adults?

I have become a fair sewist and I am thinking about sewing up some of the styles in the show, especially the PJs Gidget wears.

I would dearly love to have a surfer shirt. To me surfer shirts are the horizontally wide striped, 3/4 length sleeved shirts. Usually in red/white, blue/white.

What's a sewist? A non sex term for someone that sews? HA! I looked it up, watch people make an easy thing hard LOL. Any time I sew I'm a tailor

A tailor sews only clothing. A sewist sews whatever they want. A huge difference in terms.

If you are a tailor, sew a surfer shirt.

My Mother liked to sew , she was quite good at it. Clothing and crafts . She referred to herself as a " Seamstress" .:)

A seamstress sews only clothing as well. A sewist sews anything, including sails for a boat. But you can call yourself anything you want...

Actually, that is how I ended up with sewist. I knew I wasn't a seamstress since I wanted to sew more than clothes, so I went with sewer, but that seemed, well septic, so I looked it up.

At least people are showing the Gidget forum some love. Usually, she don't get so many guests.

To original poster, you may just have watched the show too many times. Give it a break and come back to it later and you'll find it as great as you once did. I watched Gidget when it was first on and ever since the DVDs came out I watch it every summer starting about end of May thru beg. of September. I really enjoy it and look forward to it, as it seems like a perfect summer show. This was Sally Fields best show and everyone in it is perfect for their roles. Hang 10.:D

If you're going to start making up new words to replace perfectly fine ones, then I suggest you stick to sewer for your sewing pleasures. Meantime tailors and seamstresses have too much respect for their craft than to make up ridiculous titles.

By watching the entire season I gave it the break you suggested. I enjoyed watching the show as I posted. "I will watch them all and have fun doing it" Enjoyment doesn't make something good. It is a bad show. One thing I didn't mention, I really like the cheesy shot where the kids are paddling out on their boards closing scene. Yep Gidg is irrepressibly cute and I can see why she made it big...she can act

Good show - bad show - it's all a matter of opinion.

Can't hate a show that set up Gidget with three dates for the same dance.

I think that the OP's thread title was a bit over the top. While the show wasn't exactly Emmy-worthy, it was hardly "excruciatingly bad". "Gidget" had a sweet, charming quality, and Sally Field's endearing portrayal of the show's title character was responsible for most of that. The supporting characters (and the actors who played them) were good, particularly Gidget's doting Dad (Don Porter and SF had very believable chemistry). The writing in the pilot was a bit clunky (snoopy sister Anne reaching an inexplicable conclusion after reading an innocent passage in Gidget's diary), but it improved in future episodes. The show was aimed at a younger, mid-1960s audience and geared towards that sensibility. In short, it was a funny, likeable series that deserved a longer run.
