View Full Version : Are woodwind instruments really needed in a marching band?
Fan of old shows 09-22-2002, 01:52 PM are they? my schools band has them and they are not hearable on field? dont get me wrong you need people to making a marching band but what is the purpose of them if you cant hear them. unless you got a woodwind solo out there or something.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 09-22-2002, 03:18 PM Actually....you prolly don't realize it, but you do hear 'em. I mean, if they took 'em out you would says "Boy, that sounds different."
:D:D:D
Montana Ponine 09-22-2002, 03:21 PM Sure, woodwind intstruments have every right to be in a marching band! Amy is right...it just wouldn't be the same with them....
Titania 09-22-2002, 03:43 PM well, you cant hear a lot of woodwinds in a stadium. ALTHO- i play piccolo and you can DEFINITLY hear that in a stadium- god, you can hear that thing everywhere.....
Kay Scarpetta 09-22-2002, 04:34 PM well people can hear my flute so....lol.
Rockapella722 09-22-2002, 07:35 PM without bari saxes, tenor saxes, alto saxes, clarinets, flutes, and other woodwind instruments, youd only have trumpets, tubas, and trombones. (and percussion.)
You wouldn't have a marching band without woodwinds.
(i'm the ULTIMATE band nerd. I oughtta know.)
MrsGarrettRocksMySocks 09-22-2002, 10:25 PM Totally!!
Actually, my band director, considers the brass in with the woodwinds, I believe... so, they're definitely needed in our band...lol
Anyways, I'm the drum major, soooooo I'm in the front of the band, and, yea...you can hear em'....specially the piccs....OMG I think I have permanent hearing loss from the piccs and we only have three of em'!!! The clarinets are ALMOST as loud as the piccs...we only have a few of those as well. Bari sax has a solo in "Barbarian Horde" (from Gladiator) so, yea...you can hear it...haha... sooooo, yea...they're all important...

Oh my gosh, is it difficult to get all you guys in tune?? I'm the only picc we have, because we are a small band. But shoot, I know it's hard enough getting flutes in tune.

We have a 8 flutes and piccs -- it's a mix, and I'm section leader YAY! It's fun at band camp when you're in a small dorm room with no carpets and nothing to absorb the sound, and you're trying to tune a really high chord! *NOT!* We're an annoying bunch, but whatever. Brass and Woodwind play different kinds of parts. I noticed this in our show last year, when I stood next to 2 trumpet players for most of it. They have music thats pretty simple --> quarter note, 2 eights, halfnotes, etc. We have music that's more runs and 32nd notes. But when you put it together, it sounds great, it's really cool.

but thats what makes a picc/flute section! ;)
we're pretty annoying as well...the drum major sarcasticly calls us the "piccolo princesses" and constantly teases us ("whats the difference between a piccolo and a dog whistle- the dog whistle is used by men to call dogs..." agh...) and the assistant director calls us (me especially sadly) "the bitchery"

-*Leah*- 04-25-2003, 06:56 PM Yeah, in most of the songs we play the clarinets and flutes(and piccolo) are the only people you can hear. You can always here us way better than the trumpets and saxophones. So, yeah without us ya'll wouldn't have a band!!! *lol* BTW I play the clarinet.:D :happyface

yeah, we have a pretty crappy trumpet line. they don't play. they are all chicken. the flutes and clarinets are pretty good though. percussion is pretty good too.
IownTheDivision69 04-26-2003, 04:49 PM we dont even have a marching band. my skewls so flippin cheap.
and our bands suck... i dunno. i mean the orchestra's pretty good, but we suck. lol.
Polniaczek033 04-26-2003, 05:56 PM it would't be a band without woodwinds, u can hear SAXES!
I play Sax and the Bells. What ever mrs.nelson needs me to play.
Urgh! You've gotten into a deep, deep issue for me! At my university, the marching band does not allow woodwinds - c'mon, how UNFAIR is that? They believe this same thing, that you can't hear the woodwinds. It's so not fair, and it's not true. I too, am a flute/piccolo player - and it sucks that I played the instrument for 4 years in highschool, was first chair for 3 years, and I can't play it in college.
To add insult to injury, the band director decided that the saxes weren't really woodwinds (whatever that means) and they're allowed in. (Although people can hear piccolos a lot easier than they can hear saxes.)
IownTheDivision69 04-26-2003, 07:44 PM ack, everyone plays the flute. i played flute in fourth grade, but i switched to the clarinet in 5th. and then i started playing bass clarinet in fifth grade. woo!

thaz cuz the saxaphone is like a 6th lower than the rest of the woodwind instruments [i'm not sure if thats right] but their like a 6th of a pitch lower than all the other instruments. i think??
Kay Scarpetta 04-26-2003, 07:50 PM I play Flute. I used to play Clarinet, but not anymore. I also can play Piccalo but I don't own one.
*PinkLady* 04-26-2003, 07:50 PM I think you can hear woodwinds better than other instruments a lot of times. Of course, I come from a school whose marching and jazz bands can't play instruments to save their lives, so I may not be very reliable.
