This is my first time watching all the way through. I am in Season 4 on episode 13.

I think you will find Charley's arrival episode to your liking. Bub's absence is explained, I'll let you watch for yourself and decide if the transition was handled in a satisfactory manner.

You may be aware of the mentions that Bub and Charley had done a vaudeville act together. Charley's past seamanship (actually a cook on board) is played up at times, he was a Merchant Marines veteran. His regaling other characters with anecdotes and stories of his travels becomes a series fixture, most commonly in a form like "I once knew a gal in Singapore who..."

I'm anxious to see your eventual reactions to the color episodes, I regard those as being moreso in my "wheelhouse" and can give you better replies.
