Donald Bellisario is turning 83 today. Bellisario graduated from Penn State, and worked for over a decade in the advertising industry. In the mid-seventies, he decided to move to Hollywood and give a career in television writing and production a try. He worked as a producer, and sometimes a writer, on series like Black Sheep Squadron and Battlestar Galactica. At the end of the 1970s, Bellisario had an idea for a series about a private investigator who lived in the guest house of a luxurious estate on Oahu, and frequently had a bone to pick with the estate’s British caretaker, Higgins.

During Magnum, P.I.’s eight-season run, Tom Selleck, as Magnum, and John Hillerman, as Higgins, each won an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Bellisario’s next series idea, the adventure series Tales of the Gold Monkey, was not a success, but in 1984 he created Airwolf, which ran for four seasons, and at the end of the 1980s, he followed up with Quantum Leap. Bellisario’s greatest successes came with the military legal drama JAG, which began running in 1995 and lasted for ten seasons, and with its spinoff series NCIS, essentially a military police procedural. NCIS will return for its sixteenth season this fall; it has had two spinoff series of its own, neither of which Bellisario has been involved with.
