"True Detective" is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.

Issa López, who served as showrunner for "Night Country", the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.

It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five will be related to "Night Country" or will be an entirely new story.

HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi told Deadline during an interview at "The White Lotus" Season 3 premiere where the new season of "True Detective" will take place.

“It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay,” Orsi said. “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”



Filming on the new season is slated to begin in the coming months, with casting in preliminary stages.

“I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa; she’s excited,” Orsi said. “We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”

Orsi also revealed that the new season will launch in 2027.
